Fly Rod Finesse for Locating BIG BASS in Summer Heat
PART ONE:
Fly Rod Finesse for Locating BIG BASS in Summer Heat
This video Is Part One of a 3-part series about fishing with a fly rod in the summer heat in Central Florida. In part one, I am concentrating on finding the bigger bass while the fishing is not expected to be that great due to the extreme heat and sunny skies, and I am waiting for much better conditions to arrive in late afternoon showers, bring more cloud cover, light rain but not much wind. In the meantime, I am trying to adjust to much less desirable conditions that are so hot that my Go Pro camera keeps shutting down. On arrival at the lake, I am greeted by a few hatching Mayflies which raise my spirits, remembering big hatches in the past that set off great memories of feeding frenzies of the past. My strategy was to use the calmest flat surface waters near weed lines to make sure that any bass hanging around for a meal would easily spot my tiny minnow imitation which was made of extremely light material, hoping it would not spook the bass in the calm, clear shallow (less than a foot} but close to a good drop off to deeper water. I used a light 6-weight fly rod to start under the tough conditions to get the lightest presentation possible. Later in the day (in Part Two: “Catching Monster Bass in the Summer Heat on a Fly Rod), I switched to a Dragonfly imitation and a 7-weight fly rod. I only included the 3 biggest bass in Part Two, and in Part Three, I included only the one craziest, wildest jumping Bowfin that I had ever fought on a fly rod. He also went for the Dragonfly on the 7-weight fly rod. The FoamSkin Minnow and the FoamSkin DragonFly are both from my FoamSkin Series of Flies that I plan to make available to some of my viewers, and also, I am planning to make some tutorials or course on “How to Make and Fish”.
