Tackle'Ing Big Bass! Rod Reel and Bait Locker Set up
Welcome back to Big Leo, Your Big Bass Buddy!, where we’re dedicated exclusively to Fishing Planet and the pursuit of Trophy and Unique Largemouth Bass!
In today’s episode of our Fishing Planet Beginners Guide, we’re getting serious about choosing the right artificial lures, configuring our rods and reels, and building a practical rod locker designed to help us catch BIG BASS!
But before we start buying equipment, there’s one fundamental principle I want every Bass Buddy to understand:
THE PRESENTATION DETERMINES THE EQUIPMENT, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!
Selecting the right rod and reel isn’t simply about buying the most expensive equipment or choosing the highest-rated tackle. It’s about understanding what you want your lure to accomplish in the water and selecting equipment that helps you achieve that presentation consistently.
Today, we’re putting that philosophy into practice!
WHAT WE COVER IN THIS EPISODE
1. THREE FUNDAMENTAL CATEGORIES OF BASS LURES
We begin by organizing our artificial bass lures into three practical categories.
TOPWATER LURES: WALKERS & POPPERS
Topwater fishing is one of the most exciting ways to catch Largemouth Bass in Fishing Planet!
We’ll discuss selecting equipment suited to surface presentations, where rod movement, retrieval rhythm, and lure action are essential.
Whether we’re walking a bait across the surface or working a popper to produce an enticing disturbance, our equipment needs to support the intended presentation.
RETRIEVAL LURES: CRANKBAITS & SPINNERBAITS
Next, we examine retrieval-based lures, including crankbaits and spinnerbaits.
Here, we’re especially interested in retrieval speed, lure depth, and maintaining effective movement through the water column.
We’ll discuss why reel selection and retrieve characteristics matter when trying to achieve consistent lure performance.
JIGS, WORMS & SOFT PLASTICS
Finally, we turn to the versatile world of jig-and-plastic combinations and artificial worms.
These presentations require deliberate attention to rod movement, retrieval timing, pauses, and the ability to work lures through productive underwater structure.
For anglers pursuing larger Largemouth Bass, understanding how to present these baits around submerged logs, vegetation, and deep-water transitions can be particularly valuable.
2. BUILDING OUR BIG BASS ROD LOCKER
Now that we’ve identified our three principal lure categories, it’s time to configure our equipment!
Rather than filling our rod locker with several nearly identical setups, we want each combination to serve a specific purpose.
We’ll discuss how to organize our available rods and reels around the presentations we’re planning to use.
The objective is to arrive at the lake with versatile equipment capable of supporting multiple artificial lure techniques.
3. ROD & REEL SELECTION: OPTIMUM LURE PRESENTATION
This is one of the most important lessons in today’s episode!
We’re examining how rod and reel characteristics influence our ability to produce the desired lure action.
Among the considerations are:
Rod length, action, and lure-weight ratings.
Reel retrieval characteristics and gear ratios.
Compatible fishing line and equipment strength.
Matching lure weights to the rod’s recommended range.
Selecting combinations suited to topwater, retrieval, and soft-plastic presentations.
A rod and reel may be powerful enough to land a fish but still be poorly suited to working a particular lure.
OUR OBJECTIVE ISN’T SIMPLY TO FIGHT THE FISH. IT’S TO PRESENT THE LURE PROPERLY SO WE CAN CATCH THE FISH!
Remember, the appropriate setting depends on the strength of your complete tackle combination, not simply the weight of the bass you’re hoping to catch.
4. CHECK YOUR CONFIGURATION BEFORE YOU CAST!
One of the easiest mistakes in Fishing Planet is assembling equipment that looks impressive but isn’t properly matched.
Before we head out onto the water, we’ll discuss checking our rod, reel, line, and lure combinations to ensure they work together as intended.
THE BIG LEO PHILOSOPHY
At Big Leo, we aren’t simply interested in showing you where to cast or recommending the latest expensive equipment.
We’re interested in understanding WHY a particular configuration works, HOW it influences lure presentation, and WHAT adjustments can improve our fishing results.
Fishing Planet offers an extraordinary range of rods, reels, lures, and fishing techniques. But developing a deliberate approach to selecting and configuring that equipment is what allows us to use it effectively.
REMEMBER:
Choose the presentation. Select the lure. Configure the equipment. Set your drag. THEN GO FIND THOSE BIG BASS!
ONE GAME. ONE SPECIES. ONE PURSUIT. UNIQUE LARGEMOUTH BASS!
