5 Baits YOU MUST Throw During September
September bass fishing is where things finally start getting interesting again.
The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler, baitfish are beginning to move, and largemouth bass are starting to leave some of those dog-day summer patterns behind. The early fall transition is here — and the bass know it before we do.
In this video, I’m breaking down 5 bass baits YOU MUST throw in September and exactly where, when, and how I like to fish them.
We’re covering the entire water column — from explosive topwater bites to roaming bass chasing baitfish and those stubborn fish that still want something crawling along the bottom.
🎣 My 5 September Bass Baits:
🐸 Hollow Body Frog — One of my absolute favorite September baits. Get up early, find the grass, lily pads and heavy cover, and hang on.
💥 Whopper Plopper — Don’t just burn it back. Twitch it, pause it, give it short bursts and let that bait sit there looking helpless.
🐟 Soft Plastic Jerkbait / Fluke — When bass start focusing heavily on baitfish, a Zoom Fluke, Super Fluke or Super Fluke Jr. can get absolutely destroyed.
🔥 Soft Plastic Swimbait — Small Keitech and X Zone-style swimbaits are perfect for matching smaller September forage and targeting bass actively chasing bait.
🪱 Ned Rig — When everything else fails, slow down. This little bastard will stay tied on for me from September right through spring.
The biggest thing to remember is that September doesn’t look the same everywhere. Northern anglers may already be experiencing a strong fall bite while much of the South is still dealing with warm water and lingering summer conditions.
That’s why these five baits give us options.
Surface. Mid-depth. Bottom.
Find the baitfish. Find healthy vegetation. Pay attention to changing water conditions, and let the bass tell you what stage of the transition they’re in.
The brutal summer grind is almost behind us.
Fall bass fishing is coming. Let’s get hooked.
