HUGE CALICO and NONSTOP Sand Bass Caught in King Harbor Redondo Beach California | Kayak Fishing
King Harbor on a negative low tide — minus 1.7 feet — and the bass were stacked. One big calico, five sand bass, and the spotty that finished the trifecta.
I got on the water at 6 AM with the dock nearly drained, and that low water was the whole plan — it pulls the fish into the deeper structure where you can find them. I pulled up the Tide Read app right on the kayak to read the bite: slack tide at the trough, barometric pressure on the rise, a minor moon coming. Then I tied on a Z-Man white fluke and went trolling around the live bait barge.
First fish in, a beautiful calico bass hammered it on my 8’6″ Eagle Claw — the $34 Walmart special — and gave me a real fight on that light rod. From there the barred sand bass came in droves, one after another off the Carolina rig. When the bite slowed I switched to the A-rig with the chatterbait (yeah, still soaking those paddle tails in Taco Bell sauce), and right as I doubted the vibration, the spotty hit and locked in the trifecta. Seven fish, one low-tide morning, three species. Grateful for this one.
