Winter Fishing For… Topwater Bass?

Topwater fishing with a rat lure, in January, in North Dakota! Call me crazy but with the recent warm weather up here and a power plant heated lake I think the rat might be worth a try!

  1. Ok…now I just don't know what is real anymore. @NDYakAngler is catching topwater largies in ND in JANUARY???????????? Who am I? Where am I? Is anything real? (staring intently at my own wiggling fingers)

  2. I was raised on a farm with a 3.5 acre lake that was dammed up in the 50's for cattle water supply. You could sit in the middle of that lake, dead of winter (in KY), with a Berkely power finesse worm in 20 feet of water and catch more 2-3lb bass in a day than you could all summer long. They'd pile-up on an old well pump house made of cinder block. Like candy from a baby, but only in winter. I miss those days.

  3. Might have been a little slow for you today, but just one is infinitely better than zero. And thanks for leaving in the clip where you were going for the tree bass. Seems like that's where I spend about half my time. Really enjoy watching you fish.

  4. Thatโ€™s awesome! I get the same itch for Topwater action and always start throwing a plug in February/March even though I know itโ€™s to early and cold. Iโ€™ve never caught a TW Bass in water that cold though.. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  5. Thanks for this Matt. I have been wondering if you would make the trip west to fish at Nelson. Enjoyed it! You are welcome to come to my cabin by Wirt, I caught my PB largemouth twice this past summer summer, 20.25&21.75, both minutes from my place!
