How do you find fish in a new lake? Where do you look and how do you target them? Come along with Matt for a day on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. With no outside information and little more than a map to guide the way, he covers water and locates feeding bass.
Whether you’re in the PNW, the Midwest, or deep in the South, bass all behave the same way. Once you understand their feeding habits and basic movements they become highly predictable. Don’t let a new fishery frighten you, its not that hard to find fish.
During the cold months we typically start by exploring the backs of deep pockets and creeks. If you can locate baitfish with your electronics you’re already off to a great start! Pay attention to the depth of those baitfish and repeat the process in a different location until you find baitfish with bass around them.
Once you’ve located fish it simply comes down to confidence. Pull out your favorite lures, those baits you’ve got the most confidence in, and begin targeting those bass. If you don’t have confidence baits look below, you’ll find a break down of the lures and gear Matt had the confidence to use on his first visit to Cumberland.

If you can keep the buckeyes away from you it’s a good lake to fish.
I just subscribed to you the other day. And just found out you fished were I’m from. 😂
Great vid as always but I have to ask: "why, after crossing the country to get to one of the premier fishing lakes in the country would you only spend 1/2 a day?"!!! OMG..lol…literally a chance of a lifetime to fish one of the most productive lakes in the USA and you "had to bail"…? Ohhh man, just busting your chops but yes, what a shame you had to leave! Tight lines from Redondo Beach, CA.
Ran out of Halcombs…Did you just run over to Guffey Creek or back in Indian? I run out of Conley but never fish the west end and plan on heading down this winter.
I’m from that area!! So bad ass that u guys fished one of our lakes!! I love fishing this place
You guys didn’t fish the right spots link up with me next time your down here we’ll catch 10 pounders
Matt has the first on the water tackle shop gotta love this dude
You all should try out cave run lake in kentucky. Its a challenge to fish but there are some large bass in there
I'd like to go fishing one day with you.just one day.😀👍 awesome video.and NICE fish.
Off topic but will the calcutta conquest 200 work for larger swimbait? Mainly 6-8" but a occasional 9"
Happy to see you guys come east to my home lake!
Hey Matt! Correct me if I’m wrong, but when you wearing flip-flops in December on Cumberland!? I think you had on socks but still flip-flops! LOL. Typical California dude. Enjoy the video as always. Would love it if one day you did hey video on Lanier my home lake. God bless!
Hey off topic but I'm looking into getting a Aldabaran mgl or a Metanium mgl and was wondering what you would pick if you could only have one and why .
Great video Matt. I live in Somerset and Cumberland is my home lake. I’m a big fan of TB so I was pretty stoked to see you fishing here. If you ever come back I’d be happy to take you out and let you see more of the lake. Maybe get on a good smallmouth bite. Take care and keep up the good work
Matt! Flip flops with socks! Lmao! Come on man!
Nice striper!!
I have a question….I live in Texas and fish in heavily pressured gravel pit pond it has a lot of hydrilla and underwater grass so snagging is really common lately we have been having a lot of rain so the water is murky but the ponds water is originally clear. My goal this winter is going after a couple of 8 pounders that are said to be out there so I was wondering if you have any suggestions on a lure that i could use specifically for that monster? I haven't got a bite all October I usually catch fish from 1-4 lb on rage cross or finesse worm. I am new to this so any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
The flip flops and socks 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Would love to see y'all put it to them on Dale Hollow!Lots of Smallies!
Love 🎣 period! But I absolutely love striper fishing the most! Another Great vid! Thnx tctl bssn!
Man the time of this video is nice… I will be going for one like just that in few weeks
What, it isn't December yet, Thought these were supposed to be current
I from mexico i got i cuestion the 2 red stick in the boat wath r 4
Hey Matt! What is the story behind the fish mount on the right side of your desk? Bet it would make a good story time video!
Matt if your ever back in the area need to try Norris and Cherokee giant stripers and smallies
Soo happy to see you back and happy Matt
dude always love seeing that monster bass mount you have on your desk man such an amazing fish!
Perfect timing for this video. I'll be going there in the next month, but i hope you have a Dale hollow video coming soon. My first trip to Dale will be in December.
I'm headed there in several weeks … any suggestions ? Baits ? What to fish? Anybody
Hey Matt, nice fish. Thanks to both of you for all the information. So how cold does it have to be to wear Sox under flips? (Native CA here)
Bruce
Nice vid Matt
would have loved to know you were here on my home lake 5 minutes from the house. would love the opportunity to just shake your hand and let you know how much I enjoy your guys videos and how much you have helped my fishing. thank you again. safe travels and God Bless
Great to see this video, and I have spent a dozen 5 day weekends on houseboats on the Cumbie, watching the striper packs busting is almost torture sometimes, but I did get one deep on a ball head jig 1oz and a huge curly tail grub in White, and I took a magic marker and pepper specked the white grub, my PB striper 26.6 lbs. a ton of gorgeous 4-5 lb smallies too. I was Kentucky Born and Raised, and still go back 3-4 times a year to Cumberland and Kentucky Lake….You're one great fisherman Matt,on any lake, and glad you guys filmed so much of your Ky , Tenn trip.
Fun Fact: this is my favorite channel. Reasons why is that i learn so much from you and the team and you're not an "in-your-face" youtuber with dubstep playing in the background.
Thanks for another great video Matt! If your open to suggestions I would love to see some underwater square bill crank footage next season.
Welcome to my neck of the woods!
Maybe a video on what you take when traveling? 3-5 rods, and a tackle bag of baits for anywhere in the country. Sounds like the average anglers set-up.
Same thing happened to me in East Tennesee last year. Didn't have any mono or braid or topwater in the boat, and they were chasing bait on top!
