Free rig is from Korea not Japan .
The free rig is actually, originally a Korean technique adopted by the Japanese before it spread here.
The OSP Dolive Beaver is a good one for it
I did some tinkering with the Free Rig a couple years ago but never a lot. I primarily used craw style baits around cypress trees and it definitely got bites in pressured areas. At the time I did use spinning gear, but it was a 7’ MHF spinning rod. I also used 15# leader and used much tighter drag for the EWG hooksets. I liked the idea of the spinning gear for how freely the line comes off the spool. To me it would SEEM that on almost all casting gear the lure would still pendulum back towards you more so than with the free spooling nature of a spinning reel. Especially when fishing vertical cover, I wanted the presentation to fall as straight as possible to the base.
Bought two of those sun shirts during the end of year sale. One for my brother for his birthday. They seem like great shirts and he loved the design. I had to pick up two more after hearing about the sale.
OSP DO-Live Beaver and Megabass Bottle Shrimp
Been fishing a free rig for 3 years , one thing I recommend is use the most sensitive rod you own because sometimes when the bait is on the fall it gets inhaled and if you don't feel the bite immediately and start reeling the slack you will gut hook the fish , the fun thing about it is experimenting with different baits , I have tried almost every type of bait , my favorites are a Biospawn Vile Tube, Big Bite Baits Fighting Frog, Xzone Adrenaline Crawl, Geecrack Bellows Gill, Deps Bullside, I use a tungsten cylinder weight and #14 sunline FC Sniper
I really like the Free Rig and believe it gets more bites than a T-Rig most of the time. It’s not good around brush piles though.
I also like the EWG hooks with the welded ring. It does make the bait free-er to move and I think it gets more bites.
Got 2 sunshirts for our next tournament on Orange lake in Florida next weekend (10th). Fomntt tour
depends on the bait. lizards and rage bugs want more of a Trig glide.
hay i have been fishing this free rig for about 4 years now! but good video anyway!
The hottest part of the summer I was throwing one with a rage bug and a big ribbon tail worm as the plastic and was getting bites when bites where really hard to get down here in the south. I threw it a little bit through the fall and caught them again. Haven't really tried it this winter but if I had to guess with a rodent or pit boss it would catch them again. It's been a pretty cool technique and becoming one of my favorites.
Great info! I really appreciate that you put out so much helpful and well-thought content.
Been fishing the free rig for the past 4-5 years, I dont fish a texas rig anymore. The DEPS cover scat on a free rig is an absolute killer.
I’ve been fishing a trick worm on this but flat craws work great too. But… I snell knot the hook. Gives it a little kick up when hook meets the slider and protects the knot as well. To me any little bit helps.
The free rig has been really good for me on deeper rock walls , rip rap, and humps. Have also had good luck using an osp dolive stick and yamamoto d shad in current.
The elites ain’t using Texas rig anymore they all spotlight the bass
I'm curious on the best ways to work it. Do you drag it, hop it or pick it up high off the bottom. The Rojas fighting frog will float a 5/0 hook on top of the water, how do you think that would work for bedding fish?
Thanks Ty, your buddy catching them that quick out of deep water, is the bends a problem for the fish?
I live and fish in Korea, everyone freerigs here! have been for many years!
My best bait so far on the free rig has been the Lake Fork Ring Fry worm

Some guy free rigging the Honey Nugget
Fish this with the scat or yamatanuki. Thank me later.
Ha Tyler try a Bellows Gill, crazy results fishing weed edges.
This style of weight was first invented in Korea. Japanese later adopted it. (fr. Google)
Ben Milliken is the master of this rig, it works 4 sure.
I free rig fish a bunch. Been doing it for around 2 years. The baits like the honey nugget will definitely out perform conventional Texas rig baits. Flat sided bats is what you want. Deps bull flat, Geecrack bellows shad, and bottom up gimme are 3 baits that were specifically designed for the free rig. Awesome baits for the presentation.
I tried a free rig with a fluke a little in the late summer. I didn’t catch anything but I am still interested in fishing it. Just need to lock it in my hand.
? isn't it funny how ever year new techniques come up that are killing the bass (lol). Just amazing this goes on. Manufactures just love this.
Not a Japanese technique but a Korean technique.
Bro, i throw this exact rig in the socal salt with great success. Decoy, jackall, owner.
Texas rig will never be replaced.
I been fishing the free rig for over 3 years. I like to fish the techniques of Japanese as their ways are new to the bass here in the states. The free rig to me is best for lethargic bass. It gives the bass a free kick up without feeling that lead or tungsten.
Floating baits have worked the best for me. One of my favorites that I crush on from the back of the boat when my buddy in the front can't get bit is one of those Berkeley waterbugs. Zmans finesse worms are great too.
I get the most bites on the "Vato" Rig. Great Video, Tyler! Thanks
I do it on my bfs with a 1/32 oz raid japan 2.5 craw
Guys this is not true don't use free rig!!!!!
