Why does this lure actually work?

Helped my buddy Ayden pre fish for a tournament. Started off throwing a jig skipping docks. Got bit once. Fish wanted nothing to do with my jig. Ayden was throwing the Urchin style bait, specifically a Prickly Pear. And he was getting crushed. I ended up switching and caught 4 bass on it. Very surprised that it actually worked.
