  1. Easy to grasp explanation of gear ratios. Years of experience has taught me that faster is not always better.. When Carolina rigging for example, you can actually over work the bait with a 7 or 8 speed reelโ€ฆmany of us Tourney guys use a 6.1 or 28 IPT (inches per turn )reel for the Carolina technique. Time on the Water!! Like most things in Bass fishing will help you figure out what works best for you. Rob

  2. Man they need like a reelguide . The schematics don't tell me but what's obvious. I have a Shimano slx 150 xg I found that my square bill googan crank bait is a match made In heave . 7 lb largemouth then a 8.5 lber about 30 minutes after. Still not sure what else it's good for. I've got the googan soft baits too. But I'm fishing a Pond. So 8:1:1 isnt best option . And I just got a Abu Garcia stx reel it came with no spool! They won't refund me either. I literally have to buy the whole reel again. Because they don't make spare spools and I have tried and tried and tried.

  3. So I just bought a 13 fishing 7:3:1 reel, thinking I would use it for lipless cranks. If i do,should I slow my retrieve compared to how fast I would retrieve on a 6 speed? Is it just a matter of experimentation to figure out what speed the bass will go for. Just hoping I didn't waste money on a reel that wont work for what I intended.

  4. Today I lost a very large heavy bass in the weeds. My bait caster kept slipping and I lost her. I paid 50 dollars for it and I thought this would be great. Apparently not
What ratio do I need ? I target big bass in northern Canada

  5. GREAT VIDEO.. I tend to like 7 speed best, then down to the 6 speeds..
2 things you didn't cover..size of the spool will also dictate how fast a bait moves, not detrimental to the equation, but what is your opinion on it?
Also, top water lures (walk the dog/popR/frog/etc) and jerk baits.. I prefer the 7 speed for those because it helps keep up with the slack line better.. same goes for any type of plastic that you retrieve with any kind of twitch..
I'm definately not trying to speak over you, but just thought it would help add to this discussion of reel speeds.
THANKS.. Hope to see you out there sometime at the mountain lakes
