We caught them deep! Swimbait and Spoon Tips For Fall Bass

Big bass love deep water, don’t be afraid to catch them! In late Fall bass congregate offshore, forming schools that are much larger than anything found in the shallows. Most anglers ignore these fish because they’re not used to fishing deeper structure with electronics, or don’t have confidence targeting suspended fish. Come along with Matt and CC to find out just how easy it is to catch quality bass in deep, open water.

At the start of the day Matt and CC planned to locate feeding fish around offshore schools of baitfish. Upon arriving at the lake they were greeted by heavy winds and cold air temperatures. While this required some adaptation, they stuck to their plan and successfully located schooling bass. This style of fishing is a commitment and often requires time spent on your electronics searching for fish. Matt used his Humminbird Solix units to scan flats and located an old house foundation in the process. While it didn’t produce today, a few waypoints were dropped around the foundation’s perimeter for future trips. This goes to show once again that time spent on your electronics is never wasted time.

After a few stops the bass were located around baitfish in 35-40 feet of water. Matt and CC made short work of them using a jigging spoon, finesse swimbait, and a tail spin. This 3-part approach allowed them to cover water by fan casting but also provided an option for dropping down in an instant on fish that appeared below the boat. The key to schooling fish is speed. Once the bass are fired up you must get the bait to them as quickly as possible or the school will calm down and the feeding frenzy will end. The combination of spooning for a quick reaction and casting to relocate the school as it moved around the area was a deadly combination.

Below is a breakdown of the gear and equipment that was used in today’s video.

  1. Love the real life with bringing the kid! I think you guys need to make a video based on how you set your child up for success when you take her out with you. I'm reluctant to take my little guy out sometimes and would love to know you guys handle bringing little kids in the boat with you. Maybe you've covered it before. Maybe you haven't. Either way, I think it'd be great to see and like everything from you guys, am sure I'd learn a lot.

  2. Soak this all up matt your whole family is happy beautifull and healthy your daughters super cute also she's going to grow up so quick your going to remember her being a baby out on the water while you and momma catching spots smallies and largemouth all day can't beat that.

  3. Hey Matt, I don't see the sun screen listed on tackle list. Smear a bunch on that sweet little princess you have in the boat with you. The best time to prevent skin cancer is all of the time.

  4. Now I see why I haven't seen your boat in a while. Nice choice on the re-power. We were killing them with a 3/4 underspin when we found the big bait balls last weekend there.

  5. My son: “Is that Matt Allen?” We love Tactical Bassin! Here’s a question – I have family of four – any experience with the Lund 2075 Vbass XS? Another option for family of four for bass fishing?

  6. Passed 30 feet, depressurization becomes too hard and mortality becomes high. I don’t fish under 30 feet for that. Fizzing isn’t a solution too as it is hard to well do the thing, and reeling fast these fishs isn’t great for them too, as it remove a y possibility to fishs to adapt a little. But i love you all @ tactical 🥰

  7. Swammer looks like good size and color.. For as many lakes that have Gizzard shad in them, those colors are a challenge to find.. Usually you have something in color that is more threadfin or a mix in color… Matt Cabellas had some that are actually good in both…Thanks again!

  8. Thank you Matt for another inspiring presentation. Would it be possible to adapt this presentation to kayak anglers at a later date? Obviously we wont't be out in the open water like the family and you were fishing today. No spot lock and probably only one graph. Thank you for any consideration.
