Urban Smallmouth Bass Fishing on the Thames River
After a busy couple weeks of fishing the Thames River while attending university, I realized I was missing a lot of the basics I’d need to fish the river properly. So, I made a trip to SAIL and geared up with fresh baits, a landing net, a first aid kit, a hand towel, and a backpack to keep it all organized. With everything packed, I grabbed an Uber off campus and set out to explore new water.
What followed was a two-day grind—full of lessons, surprises, and eventually some smallmouth bass.
Day 1 – The adventure started with excitement and optimism, but the smallmouth weren’t giving in. Tough conditions meant a lot of trial, error, and long stretches without fish. Still, every cast taught me something new about the river.
Day 2 – Armed with more patience and a better plan, I hit the water again. This time, the smallmouth showed up, and I finally put my new gear to work. The landing net got its first test, the baits proved their worth, and the Thames reminded me why persistence pays off.
