Where Where am the white/silver and rainbow trout or salmon spawn colours are the go to be have pumpkins and red ears here but after throwing them as live bait compared to throwing salmon spawn as live bait ( I'm lucky enough to have a pond thats un regulated and gets overflow from from a spawn river so I don't have to worry about legality) the salmon spawn gets absolutely crushed out here and they don't really care for gills, nothing beats the salmon
You could also do it as if it was a dying Minno as well

First time using the bluegill, got snagged, snapped my rod, had to wade through thigh high river to retrieve the bait 🤦🏻

I love the baby bull shads, the only thing close to a problem I've had with them is its hard to reel them and keep them more than 2 feet down

I’m in Colorado and I like to catch pike with those and I use bluegill and crappie
