  1. I have been on Lake Fork a number of times during big BASS.MLF tournaments and I see a fair number of professionals that drive down right crazy. I was in a well known cove on Fork one time and It's one of the most heavily wooded areas on the lake, which is already infamous for the wood to begin with.

I heard a boat coming in at full speed, assuming at any time he would shut it down. This is a pretty long distance of very dense timber. So dense in fact that even us locals who know the lake well, start our idle at the mouth of it and even then its a little hairy at idles and there is virtually no way in or out without at least bumping wood a few times.

Well, that sound of backing off the throttle never came until he was about 20 yards from me on the opposite shore. My guide (who is known for some pretty crazy runs himself) and I looked over expecting to see some crazy newb, but it was none other than Mike Iaconelli. I get that by having a sponsor boat, you have a lot less care about trashing your boat and even if you do pop a lower unit (which he later did do) the Yammy pit can have you up and running pretty quick.

However, none of that changes the safety factor. Many of them aren't good examples of proper boating safety. Sadly, in fact its quite the opposite.

  2. I totally agree with you on this one. That age comes with a certain degree of a "bullet proof" mentality. Also, at that age, you just aren't that skilled at running a boat yet. I don't know the particulars in this incident, but in others I do know about, some of them may have not happened if trailering were allowed. On a big lake, in a big tournament and you feel like you need to make a long run, it will increase the pressure to do a speed that in a given situation makes for the potential of it being unsafe/dangerous. In any tournament, you are "on the clock" As you have more experience than anyone here, and like me, OLD (lol), do you think or recall any instance where trailering would make it safer ?? If it prevented just one accident, injury or fatality it would be worth it, wouldn't it.

I know because of my age and fear factor, I just won't do shotgun starts anymore.

  3. That Practice should have been cancelled. Good job B.A.S.S. Whatever it takes to fill your pockets with cash and take advantage of people and take their money, even collage kids.

  4. I hate when the tourneys are on the lake. They run all over the place as fast as they can, they will zoom right up on you and cut in front of you when your approaching your spot. Generally no respect for locals. Sorry to hear about the accident. They should limit engine size for tournaments. Maybe nothing over 20 hp. That would learn them!

  5. Boats don't have air bags,I had two scary times, one was a giant wake, one was a 20 something running 65,then aimed for about 500 ducks on the water, well a hen flew up and hit me in the face, going about 65,split my lip, black eye, hurt my jaw and neck,I had him take me back, medics came,he was dqued, had to have xrays,he was in a no boat zone, shallow water,so slow down,it's only a minute or two,so sorry a young guy lost his life trying to have fun.

  6. Was in local bass club in late 70s…I was an early teenager…fished 1 tournament at nite….guy ran WIDE OPEN…drew SAME guy 2 months later….so Foggy that morning…..we idled…I learned a few years later that he was a Vietnam Veteran that used to run nite missions on rivers over there….PHENOMENAL Nite vision….but HE told me you CAN'T SEE THROUGH FOG !!!!!!

  7. Been in 1 accident in all my years of fishing. Boat hit me two feet behind the steering wheel. Other boat driver was looking at something blowing around in his boat around his feet. Those kind of experiences will definitely change the way you drive your boat.

  8. Loving the hat and loving the mobile office👍 yes very sad news 🤓 that's why you have to use common sense and not go balls to the walls when the conditions aren't right🤠 Thanks for sharing Randy 🙏🙏🙏

  9. there’s been that many fatalities in tournaments you’ve fished that really surprises me that it’s that common

what do they do in those situations do they huddle everyone up and emphasize safety do they stop the tournament investigation or respect? do they try to keep it quiet?

  10. Me and my son fished a tournament last year and it was so bad I couldn’t even see the trolling motor on the front of the boat and the tournament director turned us loose and I mad my son idle toward the bank and we fished right there for 40 min til the fog lifted

  11. Also heard about that tragic accident. People don't take into account driving a boat on water with no brakes like a car, and current, waves, and semi submerged obstacles in the water to hit all lead to a very different experience than driving a car or other land vehicle. As you pointed out, things happen FAST on the water and you have almost no time to react in many cases. Common sense would say slow down in the fog…many won't especially in competitive situations such as a tournament.

  12. I fish from a 16 foot canoe with a 6 horse motor. I have to be extra cautious because so many aren't paying attention! Fog is the only other thing I worry about other than angry water. I see so many being unsafe in numerous conditions.

  13. I was at a small lake this summer, which has a 10 mph speed limit. There were a 3 guys in their early 20 flying across the lake doing at least 50 mph. Thankfully there were no kids in kayaks or small boats out on the water that day. The waves they produced would've overturned them. I have a 14 ft. jon boat, and if I didn't turn the boat to face the waves, they would've easily went over the back.

  14. I blame the people who organized this tournament. Organizers are more at fought than those college kids involved in the accident. Young people are going to do stupid things out on the water so organizers must put restrictions in place to protect young people. How many people have to die before restrictions are put in place to protect people?

  15. A lot of these college guys think they’re elite series anglers and they think they’re invincible. Maybe this will slow some of them down.. this guy was just getting started in life, and lost it for a fishing tournament. Not worth it.

  16. man, sucks one of the kids didnt make it. I posted this to my club right after it happened. Crash happened in a foggy narrows: the one boat the officers' were pullin' out of the water had the front destroyed. Sad, real bad accident.

  17. The absolute first skill ever boat angler should be required to master is the art of safe navigation. Being aware of your surroundings and being aware of your own limitations is paramount as far as boat angling skills are concerned. There's no fish or tournament worth a human life. Ever. 👍🇺🇸

  18. Randy, Randy, Randy; THE BEST thing that would help with this issue is VERY SIMPLE. DON"T RUN THE EVENT UNTIL THE FOG IS COMPLETELY GONE. Yes i've been in many an event where at "go" time everybody goes, fog or no fog. NOT COOL!!!!
Yes i believe many boaters aren't running safely even on clear days; boats are getting lighter AND faster, BUT nearly every death or serious injury I've seen came when CONDITIONS should have dictated NOT RUNNING THE EVENT! It's like the FFS issue, until the EVENT PROMOTERS STOP these kinds of things IT'S only going to get worse. I've STOPPED fishing most events now due in part to these two issues. SAD, SAD and SAD.

  19. So very sorry to hear that an angler passed away as a result of this accident, but regretfully, I see this behavior on the waters I fish way too often. Everybody is in a hurry and to hell with safety. I've been involved in too many tournaments where there are anglers that are adamant about blasting off in the fog because there's another group that's going to chance it or they're going to miss the topwater bite. And regardless of the conditions, there's way too many anglers out there that have two speeds…overspeed and idle. I see anglers on Facebook that are like…"my boat runs 68, but it should be running 72." Really?? Many don't realize that if you hit something at either of those speeds, there's gonna be hair, teeth, and eyeballs all over everything. Your life's not worth getting to your spot what often ends up being just one minute faster.

  20. When I saw the video from the accident last week I had PTSD for a minute, I almost got killed in a boat accident last April fishing a tournament when another competitor cut across a flat and hit us. Anglers need to start slowing down because these boats are too fast and some of these guys have no business driving a boat because they’re reckless.

  21. Great video, you have done several videos about boat drivers in the past and I respect that. No brakes, no training on boating skills, multiple boats at same locations going fast is just a recipe. Thanks for the reminder.
