Topwater Bass Fishing! Weightless Fluke vs Popper (Spring Bass Fishing)

Today we are doing some topwater bass fishing with a weightless fluke vs popper. Spring bass fishing with topwater can be hit and miss, especially if the water temperature is unstable. But if you can find some aggressive fish, you might just catch a big bass. I caught bass on both the popper and the fluke, but the fluke caught the bigger fish today, 3-4 lbs! I was simply dragging it across the top of the weeds and pausing when I got to open water. The bass I caught on the popper was also in shallow water about 5 feet from the bank.

  1. I really love the action on those Z-Man flukes and that smoking shad is my favorite color. My only issue with it though is I struggle with keeping it rigged properly as it tends to slide down the hook. I've used EWG's with keepers with better success, but then after you catch a fish, its nearly impossible to slide the lure back down over the keeper. Luckily they are incredibly resilient baits…almost to a fault.

  2. What size line were you using? I'm still new to using a baitcaster and can't cast weightless soft plastics for the life of me. I usually run 14-15lb mono, I'm wondering if I should downsize a little so I can cast lighter stuff more effectively.

  3. My state (WV) gave everyone free fishing this month so every lake, pond, stream and mud hole has 1000 people fishing in it. Went to 2 different small lakes today and couldnโ€™t even put my boat in because there was no where to park. Each lake is 300 acres or below and has parking for around 100. As you know all water doesnโ€™t hold fish so you end up with 10 people trying to fish the same weed line. I am going to buy me a rain suit and just fish on the rainy days. Maybe then I can find the peace and quiet I fish for.
