My Profile:
http://www.mattstefanfishing.com/
I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
I believe in KISS!! KEEP IT SIMPLE SIMON!!
Banning forward facing sonar in pro tournaments would be bad for the entertainment value of the sport, and thus would be bad for the marketing potential of pro bass fishing.
Good video Matt
I think you are spot on. The bubble is bursting and things are leveling back out in lots of markets and while it's scary, it's predictable and in the long run, very good for the consumer. People looking to buy cars or houses or boats or fishing gear or even groceries have been dealing with the 2020 bubble for years and it's kinda been a long time coming.
My only prediction isore people using left hand reels. Newer anglers and older anglers also.
Another prediction is the increasing number of knockoffs such as Berkleys Gilly and Nessie swimbaits, Zaldains Magdraft copy, Rapalas newly released crush city line (knockoff of OSP Dolive Beaver e.g.).
Iโm seeing lots of folks talking about another big recession and a housing market crash in 2024. Not saying I agree or disagree but either of those things would affect the fishing industry.
When states end gas motors, will tournament fishing go electric or skip that n go virtual fishing/sim fishing, so fans can see what you looking at thru their VR goggles?
I would like you to start making some new top water frog ๐ธ
List of new top topwater Whopper
I think the new trend will be something I saw a few of the new opens qualifier young kids doing. Fishing bigger traditional baits along with ffs. Full size jigs, skirted buzzbaits, glide baits, bigger paddle tails. Everybody is throwing tiny finesse stuff and the big stuff will become effective again.
I like the prediction of some guys going over the top to try to get ffs banned. Hearing Schmidt is running 2-16s and 3-12s of garmins up front, that is going to look insane.
I kind of hate to put this out thereโฆ but I believe that the lure blank/custom lure market will continue to grow.
I hope you're right about the internally weighted plastics thing- like the rigs you guys make. They're awesome- they save me a lot of storage space and they simplify rigging up on the water- which is really important on a kayak. And they work- none of the rest of it would matter if not for that point- they catch fish. I'm excited to see where you guys go next- I know you're coming out with some jigs soon, but I have feeling there are more rigs to come as well- eventually, I hope. If you guys could simplify the drop shot rig- where we only have to tie one knot- that would be amazing. I've tried tying up premade rigs but- then storing them becomes a nightmare. You go get one and they're all tangled and tied in a knot- it doesn't work.
What's going to trend for me is continuing to keep it simple , uncomplicated and enjoyable. Sometimes I grab one rod and reel tie on a bait and that's all I bring.

I don't care what Andrew Upshaw says I like your rigging and lure videos, that's aren't goofy…
Got an early Christmas gift…some peace and quiet. The wife and her cousin decided to start making Christmas cookies after dinner. Cookie sheets banging, two mixers whirling away, glass bowls clanking and I think they're both hard of hearing. They're in the same room but you can hear them talking from the driveway. They had to make a grocery run for more supplies. Ahhh! Quiet for twenty or thirty minutes. Now if you were local she would fix you up with shortbread cookie, magic cookie bars, almond balls, peanut butter cookies and sprits cookies. Too bad postage rates are the way they are.๐
Air lizard comeback please. Wink wink Core Tackle could make it ๐
Hey Matt have you had any problems with the MHX whinn grips wearing down? I have seen a few reviews saying they wear down fast, but I want your opinion because I know you know what you are doing. Thanks
I think an economic slowdown is needed for the fishing industry. I feel like many companies have absolutely taken advantage of the recreational angler with pricing and marketing over the past few years. Theyve had there good highly profitable years. Now its time for them to feel some hurt in sales and lose customers. Thats capitalism folks.
I think your predictions are spot on indeed! I think that rigging up a lizard with a lighter core tackle hover rig would bring it back to an extent, just my guess. Great stuff Matt!!
Matt, I liked your projections of the industry.
I believe that Aluminum Boats will make a drastic Increase in sales. Mainly because of Gas Price, less towing Weight & Interest Rates.
The average angler wants to have Affordability in just getting to a lake. Wether that be an Aluminum Boat or Kayak.
I think the hover rig style baits will be a deal next year. You need to start calling the bait category: "Core-weighted jig heads or hooks." Or something like that. I mean, that's kinda what they are, and the name works too.
Only hoover rigs I'll buy is core tackle regardless of price. Of course many other companies are going to do a knock off of it. That's to be expected at this point. I have multiple of Zmans micro baits, their all great the micro swimbait is my favorite. I do need a better ultra light rig for throwing 1/32oz baits. I've been using my lightest spinning rod but it doesn't throw anything under a 1/16 very well. I'll stick with spinning rods for light tackle & bait casters for heavier baits. The bfs is cool but seems kinda gimmicky when theirs spinning rods that already do the job just fine. I am curious with same quality
reel, length rod, line & baits. Which can cast farther a bfs combo or spinning?
Waiting for people to put electronics on lures
Personally what I see with the electronics is that it's going to create a bigger gap between the average anglers and the pros. These baits and electronics are going to essentially be for the "upper-class" fisherman. As a bank angler myself when I hear about techniques specifically for that style of fishing I turn off the video.
I guess your the Nostrodamas of fishing ๐
New trend will be the Forward Faceing Sonar turret mounted at the console so fish can be found with big motor thus makeing it faster to find fish and faster to cover more water.By the way I hope nobody uses lizzards as I still do.๐
Turns out, people dont want to borrow money when it's expensive to borrow money.
I think the electronics have been out of hand. Donโt think they will go 6 transducers but who knows. Everyone is cutting back due to inflation and high interest rates. I know I have bought less this past year on fishing products because I am squirreling away some money in case the economy goes big time south. . I have a feeling it will. I am going to keep fishing out of my 11 year old boat. It works just fine for what I do.
