This Tiny Arizona Lake Was Full of Hungry Bass

I went bass fishing at Cataract Lake in Williams, Arizona for the first time, and this little Northern Arizona lake definitely made me work for the fish!

I arrived around 5:00 AM, only to realize the lake doesn’t open until 6:00 AM, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning a trip. There’s also an $8 entrance fee.

Cataract Lake is a small, scenic lake that’s really easy to fish and explore. The lake is stocked with trout, and there were plenty of birds around hunting the fish. I even watched a couple of fish get grabbed right in front of me!

My main goal was catching bass, but the morning started off pretty rough. I got a few small topwater bites, but the bass were so small they couldn’t really eat the lure. After struggling for a while, I switched to a wacky rig and finally caught my first bass.

Then I changed things up again, switching from a ChatterBait to a small shallow-diving square bill crankbait. That ended up being the key lure for the rest of the day, and I was able to catch a decent number of small bass and finally get some consistent action.

I also spotted a couple of dead channel catfish, so there are definitely catfish in the lake as well.

Nothing I caught was big, but honestly, that’s not what made this trip fun. Cataract Lake was a new lake for me to explore, and figuring out how to get the bass biting turned into a pretty fun day of fishing in Northern Arizona.
