A recent study done on largemouth bass may have you thinking differently as to whether you should be adding scents to your lures!
One of the biggest questions that we have as anglers is “does scent actually help you to catch more bass?”
At times you see professional anglers meticulously putting scent on their lures as if they were cooking a meal for themselves and other times you see anglers say that scent just doesn’t really make a big difference at all.
There are lure manufacturers that spend 100s of thousands of dollars creating scents that specifically attract bass, and you have guys at home melting down used soft plastics and putting them into homemade containers and they still catch bass.
So does scent matter to a bass? Will you actually catch more bass by using scent? Can a bass even smell?
In 2015, fisheries biologist at Carlton University in Ontario, Canada wanted to determine how Largemouth bass are able to locate their nest after being caught by anglers. The findings of this study may show us just how important the sense of smell is to a bass’ survival so let’s dive into it and see what science says!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

I'm surprised PETA didn't go out and buy the bass seeing eye guppies
Charlie White did this years ago…the number one fish attractant for all species was bilge water from your boat!
2 of the 15 bass went to buy milk
Fascinating video man!!!
Attractants are a belief system with many fishermen.
The oil based theory does NOT make sense as fish like shad and ,bunker, herring, tuna, all produce a lot of oil . Shad are a great live bait for bass , tuna in oil which is one of the very best baits for salmon ,herring is also great and they are very oily as are sardines so I do not get that one…
New to the channel . Love your study videos , real information delivered clearly … well done
Fish have taste receptors…all over the body
Brought to you by POWER BAIT
I would think that the magnetic field is used for long range migrations like salmon do.
LOL 9:15 bro really cant pronounce graduated.
"I use scent all the time & most of the time I'll be the only 1 catching quality fish up north on Lake Erie & The Niagara River go figure"
If scents truely mattered than ive been fishing with hard baits the wrong way. 🙈
Another time we were saugar fishing, a man beside us used anise oil. He took petroleum jelly , melted it and added anise oil and stirred it until the petroleum jelly had jelled. He would smear it on his saugar jig
My brother and I used to fish together. Every thing seemed to be the same but once he could not buy a fish while I could not fish away. He had filled up the boat with gasoline and got some on his hands AND steering wheel. After washing his hands in the boat his catch picked up. After lunch he picked up the smell from steering wheel and catch stopped. Keep your hands clean
This absolutely makes sense
On trout its a very noticeable difference
Canada! We're leading the world in fish scents lol !
Im keeping my tuna water and put my lures in it. It seems to work.
Is the Finn apparel the fish fin with 2 NN’s like a play on words for an of some sort ? Just curious because that’s my last name so minght buy some lol @BassfishingHQ
Every fresh water that may have bass have a notice NOT TO RETURN BASS TO THE WATERS AND THERE"S NO LIMIT ON BASS.
I have never caught a fish with a nose.. So no they can't smell. Taste is another point. Yes fish can taste but No They can't smell..
you think just because oil dont mix with water that this stops the scent from being found by fish? then how come we can smell it just fine through the air? hmm im not sold that the scent molecule of the oil wont travel in water
The crayfish scent I use on certain lures seems to work better when I use it, than if I dont.
They probably blew that vaseline outta their nose within minutes, otherwise probably less would rethrn
Those scientist need to start feeding their fish better
If smell really had a impact we would be having a much harder time fishing. Just like deer hunting and scent controle
