My Profile:
http://www.mattstefanfishing.com/

I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

  1. I'm the exception, rather than the rule…spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits….i rarely use a trailer anymore…..occasionally on a chatterbait, but 90% of the time i just let the skirt do the work

  2. Appreciate the advice/tips they’re really helpful but for something like “trimming half from the inside” that’s a bit tricky. Any chance you could do a short to show us how you do it or what you mean? Like is it every other piece, a few here a few there???? 🤷🏽‍♂️

  3. Don’t get bit a lot but when I do it’s a good one. My lake is a grass lake. Should I clip the tops of weed and get it hung up and rip? Have gotten bites doing both. The problem is I don’t get slot of bites.

  4. I'm old school, rarely fish these days (but want to change that) and I haven't had any personal experience with chatterbaits. I have a handful of the original version to try out. Do you ever throw one without a trailer?

  5. I put on them skirts that are empty inside- the originals' came like that- and it leaves more room for a trailer. also i will trim the boot off so trailer looks like a straight flat tail. i noticed more action that way.

  6. I went from using a 6’10 MH to a 7’1 M fast action. I feel it lets the lure move a little better. It also helped with hookups because it takes that extra split second to set the hook when they are chasing it and not ripping it away as quick with the heavier rod.

  7. I do like the power stinger buttt. A caffeine shad is my go to trailer. Absolutely zero interference with the blade and tons of erratic darting. And the little bulb style tail is the icing on the cake.

  8. I love throwing a bladed jig, however everyone else does too. This is why I'm starting to lay off em a lot. Of course I'll still throw em but nowhere like I was. I like trying to show the fish something a little bit different. They see a million vibrating jigs every day so I don't need to be a million and one.

  9. Like you I couldn't figure out what all the hype was about with the ChatterBait because I just wasn't getting bites with it. That definitely changed last year when I realized exactly what you are saying. And now I usually have one on the back of the boat at all times

  10. This is my first season using them and watching your old videos helped me be successful right out of the gate. The last couple days I've even been throwing a micro 1/8oz on a mh mod 7' spinning setup having a blast. Being a bank angler I've been using 1/4 oz and it's a fantastic bait to rip through the slime vegetation. I've even been catching small mouth on the river. Think it's my new favorite lure type

  11. 2 other tips that makes a chatter bait effective is fish it with no skirt. Just a straight tail trailer like the power stinger or a pin tail like a hog farmer spunk shad . It’s more finesse and it will hunt more. The other is attach a short 20# titanium leader. You can get titanium leader and tie a 3 turn clinch not directly to your bait and then a very small bearing swing 4-6” from bait. This doesn’t seem to scare bass away or effect action but it sure saves you from losing your bait to toothy fish that love these baits as much as bass.
