My Profile:
http://www.mattstefanfishing.com/
I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
I will leave Florida with a bruise on my side because I will throw a lipless even when I probably shouldn’t. It takes a lot of effort but it gets bites when other baits don’t.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with all us anglers and making your comments so interesting. Great job and have a great year.
What size and color do you recommend for a beginner to try with the Dirty Jigs Swim bait? Thanks for all the great advice!
A jerk bait is another one that you need very specific types of conditions and equipment to fish in grass.
Matt, have you tried the 10 inch zoom ole monster. I’ve been fishing it weightless or a 1/8 ounce Texas rig and killed it last year at Portage Lakes in Ohio along pad lines. I’m going to give that speed worm a try!
Thanks Matt. Swimjigs, have you tried putting a spinnerblade on a swivel off the back of the hook?
In grass I fish a trick worm like a fluke with a medium spinning rod, braid to swivel then 12lb floro. I move it at a decent clip looking for reaction bites but letting it sit in holes. It's a fun way to fish and gets more bites(for me) than flukes.
Great video Matt, my cabin fever just got worse.
Awesome content, Brother!
A smaller underspin in the scarcer grass or when u have space between the tops of the grass and surface of the water I feel is underutilized. You won't catch alot in the size but atleast start with a bag and can upgrade from there. But again it's one of those "certain situational" type methods. Good video Matt!
Hey Matt: Agree with boot-tail as a search bait in grass but why is an EWG with unpegged weight preferable to a screwlock belly-weighted swimbait hook?
this is going to be off topic .but would you consider doing a video on how you build your own rod's
Great information and learning experience. My lakes here in South Mississippi have mostly submerged grass and very little if any emergent our grass mats.
I am going to try all the techniques you suggested in this video when fishing the submerged grass this year.
Thanks.
I like all those choices. I also add a Zoom trick worm texas rigged, weightless. Bubble Gum and Red Shad seem to the colors that produce best for me majority of the time. Watermelon red flake, Junebug and black also work well under the correct conditions
Great video. I've been using the strike king paddle tail worm. I'll take a look at Zoom's version.
I’m so glad you mentioned the durability of the soft plastic. I use kietech and never thought about the grass stretching it etc. something to definitely keep in mind
Great video on an interesting topic. There's so many different "grass" scenarios we run into as anglers. It seems like different types grow more/less in different areas of your same lake from year to year… never the same. Being it's January and I am in Pennsylvania, I am itching for a patch of green stuff surrounded by liquid water! Thank you for more excellent info, Matt!!!
Bladed Jig is more and more my confidence around grass. In particular Z-man gets my nod for the 1/4 from the bank to search and the sheer variety of retrieves (that your channel has provided). 2023 I want to experiment more with the colored blades that you pointed out in another video. It’s going to be a great 2023!
In florida I've learned a really large profile hard jerk catchs the bigger fish off submerged vegetation. Also a simple ribbon tail 1/8 Oz weight will still put 15# limit in my boat when it's tough or cold
I fish a ton of grass. You covered my favorites (cut tail worm and swim bait). If topwater bite is going, I would put a walking bait or hula popper over submerged grass. Really like your new striker shirt as well!
Can u make a video for small, high pressure ponds with giants in it? I caught a couple really nice ones out of there but it’s been a long time since I had one over 5pounds on and there are teeners in this 2-3 acre pond. It gets fished every day (by me and one other guy) and due to location it’s really hard to imagine anyone is keeping them , so I know they are still in there!!! Also, any advice on tying on a go pro and throwing it in? I really want to try it but don’t want to lose it obv and don’t know how to get best chance of seeing fish on it as far as settings and stuff, not sure if u ever tried that but I trust ur info and know u rock solid with being able to explain stuff for us simple folks to understand 😊
Good stuff bro
