This premade steel-leader rig is sold everywhere, but almost every part of it works against the average angler. The cable is extremely thick, the sinker cannot slide freely, the oversized snap restricts movement, the crimps are unnecessary for ordinary inshore and bank fishing, and the pile of hardware creates an unnatural presentation.

In this video, I break down everything wrong with the rig, explain when wire, cable, crimps, snaps, swivels, and sliding sinkers actually make sense, and show why simpler terminal tackle usually gives your bait or lure a more natural presentation.

If you use snaps, choose the smallest strong snap appropriate for the application. For toothy fish such as king mackerel, thin single-strand wire can be far less bulky than this cable. For ordinary bottom fishing with shrimp or bait, use the lightest practical terminal tackle and tie directly whenever possible.

What do you think of this rig? Have you used one successfully, or do you leave these on the tackle-store shelf? Share your experience in the comments.

Thanks for watching, and tight lines.
