The Ultimate Swimbait for Fishing Bass on the Bottom

Bass spend a good portion of the year targeting forage on the bottom which is why baits like jigs, drop shots, crankbaits and Carolina rigs are so effective (to name a few). Chris Zaldain takes the same approach with compact swimbaits like the Megabass Dark Sleeper – he explains how to fish this unique semi weedless swimbait over the bottom and through mixed cover areas to trigger bass by deflecting the bait off of structure and cover.

Key to the bait’s effectiveness is its unique plastic molded construction, which encases a forward-positioned belly weight and a plastic dorsal fin that conceals a single hook from grass and wary bass. The bait’s design allows anglers to fish the Dark Sleeper similar to a weedless jig through areas that would otherwise fowl an exposed single hook jig and swimbait combo. Zaldain shares his 2 top methods for retrieving the Dark Sleeper, stressing the importance of regular bottom contact throughout the retrieve.

  1. Problem with these is they take forever to fall. Even with the 1oz trying to get one to the bottom in 50’. Not to mention they are known for losing fish. I’ll fish a small paddle tail on a jig head.

  2. These are great baits, but not snag resistant. It would seem like the hook would be protected by the dorsal fin, but the material is so soft it doesn't really do anything to protect the hook point. Fish a true weedless weighted swim bait hook for heavy cover and rocks.

  3. I like throwing the sleeper in place of a football jig and dragging or slowly hopping it off the bottom it just flat out catches fish and they always choke it like in the video.

  4. I've seen folks set a hook on 100+ pound tarpon with less force, as someone who grew up fishing saltwater I never understood why freshwater folks use so much force for every fish.

15+ years saltwater experience and 5+ freshwater, I've never in my life set a hook nearly as hard as anyone in these videos and I've never failed to set the hook. The biggest argument is bass have hard mouths, and bass fight so the force helps separate them from cover.

I don't believe either are true, I'm not saying it doesn't work for them, but the consistency and frequency folks do this is crazy. I have absolutely no problem getting good hook sets and I don't tear the basses mouth apart doing it. You can bass fish with ultralight gear well with little problem, I've yet to catch a bass that fought as hard as a redfish at the same weight either.

Amberjack explode on hookset, kingfish are notorious for their fight, dolphin (a different species of fish) fight forever, let alone shark, the list goes on and on … no bass ever fights anywhere near this and we use dramatically less force.

It's not needed for bass, they just don't fight…

  5. That is a pretty good episode. I have actually used that technique with other swimbaits. First time I did it off shore I was pretty skeptical, but it works.
