The Neko Rig Saved Me On A Tough Winter Day Bass Fishing

Slowing down your lure in tough winter months is going to be key. The Neko Rig will catch you more bass on tough winter days of bass fishing.

The neko rig is a great way to get slow, lethargic bass to bit in winter. It’s subtle movement and lack of action will represent the mood the bass are in. Bass are not the only think in you pond moving slow. The food in the lake or pond are in there winter habits aswell.

The great thing about the neko rig is that it can be fished around shallow cover. Prime view is an old cable water park, this makes the pond pretty featureless. The bank on the other hand is filled with reeds, chulls and rocks. Winter time bass fishing doesn’t mean the bass are going to be sitting in the deepest part of you lake or pond, they will relate to the structures that will still keep them nice and safe. vegetation like reeds will hold a nice amount of heat throughout the winter time, Rocks are the best kind of cover to fish in winter since it holds the most amount of heat throughout the winter season.

The neko rig is that presentation that can be fished in arount these types of cover. Using a weedless neko hook will give you the upper hand to get that neko rig in and out some gnarly cover. Even if you do not have any weedless hooks the neko rig is already really weedless.

In this video I threw a very winter rigs like the finesse jig and the trusty Drop shot. These two style of bass fishing are great ways to get those bass to bite but it wasn’t the right presentation for those bass on this day. They really needed some worm action that was crawling along the bottom near some sort of cover.

The colour of the lure is going to important in winter. It is always key to try and match the lure colour to what the water clarity is like. In my case the ponds water clarity was dirty so this meant throwing a dark colour like black to get those bass to see it. It is also really important to move those lures really slow in those dirty water conditions, reason for that is that the bass will not always see the lure at first, but if it sits in a spot for long enough the bass will see it and you might have a chance to get bit that way.

Winter bass fishing is a tough time in general and it is important to just be patiant throughout this these winter months. You will never get the numbers like in those warm summer months, but you might just get one of those bigger bass bit.

So all in all this tough day of bass fishing was really successful. Catching three bass is a great achievement and I will take that.
