The Mistrust Within Professional Bass Fishing

Why do the fans mistrust professional bass fishing organizations, anglers and content creators? In today’s industry, the narrative within the community is filled with good fisherman and other fisherman who spew their lies and narrative to sell their goods. It’s a toxic environment that fans tend to believe many anglers and content creators who are not good anglers or people.

  1. You hit the nail on the head! Viewership has to be way down because I know I don’t watch or keep up with fishing as
much because of the B.S with the organizations , cheating scandals, rules changes on the fly without the know. Integrity was out the window when Bass was sold out. It’s just different times we live in now and that’s what people want crazy. Appreciate the work you do Sir. You do bring up a lot of good points.

  2. There's also alot less respect for other anglers.back in the 80s and 90s when I never missed watching Bassmasters or FLW on the weekends, when the camera was on one angler,it wasn't very common to see another angler fishing nearby but now anglers are moving in to areas other anglers are fishing, starting arguments over stupid stuff…etc .it's getting out of hand

  3. As a disclaimer; I like your channel and I am a subscriber. But really you do exactly what you’re talking about regularly in your videos; stir up shit. Having videos on whether or not an angler is under- or over- rated. Videos about cheaters. Discussing how much anglers pay to fish, or how much they profit. All those things are designed to get clicks from stirring the pot. I really don’t have a problem with you or anyone else doing that, I click on the topics I am interested in and ignore the ones I am not interested (like is so and so overrated). The whole tournament coverage thing IMO is stale for several reasons I won’t go into, and I don’t watch much anymore. I do click on pot stirring videos because that is more interesting to me than watching someone stare a screen sandwiched between an obscene amount of advertising.

  4. BASS is very comfortable at this point in time. They have done a great job hiding lies and cover ups behind the curtains. They lie about the viewership, which its not hard to find out the truth. They lie about how livescope won't devastate fisheries. Look at Alabama and what those lakes are becoming…. BASS needs to be exposed. In order to become better, you need to be torn down to re build bigger and better foundations.

  5. I do agree that viewership is the number one money maker.
I do not know how it is financially sustainable for Bassmasters to not only remove the entry fees, and restructure the payouts when their viewership numbers have been on the decline for the last three years. I find it comical how they constantly exaggerate their numbers when the very company that maintains and collects that data of viewership shows beyond a reasonable doubt just how bad their viewership truly is. Personally, I think it is a publicity stunt, and most likely by 2026 we will see the re-implementation of the entry fees.
As for other YouTube channels, many of whom have figured out that the negativity is what gets them clicks, and what will boost their algorithms. Ole Dwayne ( known as cerebral tackle )is probably one of the worst of them in my opinion. Always claiming he has the receipts, and yet half of the information he puts out in my opinion is false. But that’s just my take on it and he is only one of several examples.
Regardless, the overall spectrum of professional fishing has taken a big hit in recent years and more specifically in 2024 with Bassmasters having a cheating scandal, or controversy every tournament this year. Thankfully, the MLF and the NPFL have managed to keep their nose clean in 2024.
Next year should be entertaining to say the least, and I am anxiously awaiting the fallout from the Bassmasters when the professional anglers realize how much money they are truly losing under this new pay structure.

  6. Starting to remind me of pro wrestling. I cant stand to watch it anymore. May be on its way out. I can honestly say i dont watch hardly any live feeds of tournaments. I follow a few on social and there coverage of what they do in the tournaments. And thats a very few.

  7. I do agree with all that you said but I think a lot of people do not understand the industry and what all goes on in the industry. 1st let me be blunt about something, most people don't understand how businesses work and they let their emotions run stupid without getting the full picture. Let me give you an example. You always hear people say "why they don't just get rid this guy, dq him and kick him out." Well let me tell you why. Most people will say the leagues don't want bad publicity and that may be a small portion of the equation but it really boils down to the fact that they are going to get their asses sued and they will lose if they don't have an enormous amount of disputed evidence, facts and truths. A professional angler depends on a good reputation in order to make living and if that reputation is tarnished by so called claims that he did this or that and there really isn't hard sufficient evidence of that ,and that angler loses sponsorship and other monies because of that, then he can literally sue the organization for defamation. If you think these organization don't have lawyers on retention for just these things you are living in illusional bubble. I hear a lot of people say that anglers need to have a say so in what goes on in these organizations. Let me tell you why that will never work. Put 10 anglers in a room and ask them to give you an opinion on a rule. I can tell you now there will be multiple opinions and crap will get stupid. The reason for this is because anglers are about themselves. I'm sorry to hurt peoples feelings but that is just the way it is. They always want what is best for themselves and screw everything else. Don't believe me, I give you exhibit A: 80 anglers go to the BPT, a new league with a new format and whole different line of rules. Every single change that totally screwed that league was due to anglers. Still don't believe me. When the BPT changed their every fish counts to a 5 fish limit, that was done because of the anglers. These anglers joined that league knowing the league was an every fish counts league. It didn't suit some of them and they wanted a change, not because it would be better for everyone including the league but because it's what they wanted. It is what they felt comfortable with and they thought it would benefit who? you guessed it, themselves. In that one year the BPT lost so many views and their ratings tanked that it was crazy bad. Obviously the BPT went back to what they had intended to be and now are recovering somewhat from that decision. While the leagues do need to include the anglers on changes and decisions, the anglers need to understand that in order for them to have a playing field they need the leagues to succeed and they need to put their personal preferences to side and open their eyes to what best for everyone. Gripping and hammering down on the leagues is not in the best interest of the anglers. If the leagues fails then where do you go. Unfortunately for the anglers there are tons of people waiting to replace them but on the other hand there is no one lined up to buy and save the leagues. As for content on social media, everyone needs to take all this stuff with grain of salt. Before you go out and spread a bunch of nonsense you need to do some research because not everything is true or accurate. Hell the mainstream media can't be trusted what makes anyone think that social media can be.

  8. Thought they took money out of payouts to fund the no entry fee? As far as viewing public just don’t think the ratings are anywhere near what s needed. The golden era is gone it’s downhill from here.

  9. I was taught that honesty and integrity are among the most important things in life. Your reputation is what you leave behind as you move through life. We all make mistakes, but it's how you handle yourself concerning those mistakes that matter. One of the reasons I watch and comment on your channel is because you are a straight shooter. Keep doing what you do and how you do it. The rest will work itself out in the end.

  10. Sadly the Content Creators use negative titles that hook the viewer. People love contraversary content. They are all trying to outdo the other guy to get clicks and views. It is that way in pretty much every sport. Keep the videos coming.

  11. Tv is slowly dying. I watch less Tv now than ever. We have a lot of choices online and imperson of other things to watch and do. On top of less TV , with FFS I have watched less Tourney fishing now than when I started fishing 40+ years ago. There is not much fun in watching the leagues. I’d rather watch something I’d learn from than watching MLF bounce from boat to boat for just catches. There is drama and drama is not fun. It’s not like watching trusted guys of yesteryear. Wheeler while a good angler just rubs me wrong.

  12. Steve, very true, I grew up in a time, when a hand shake, or your word, ment everything. Have I been burned, trusting someone, yes. I recently, in 2022 purchased my 2023 Caymas, from a dealer in Georgia, that I purchased other bass boats, over the phone, told him, everything I wanted, but some items, that I would purchase, and have the mfg. send them to install. He sold my old boat, that was here in florida, to a guy in North Carolina. It took 6 weeks, the boat he ordered immediately, and kept the money from the sale, when sold, as a down payment..never signed a contract. That's what, trust used to be, and why, I deal with people, for year's. Secondly, you did a video on MLF. the 15 that are leaving. You didn't mention, Boyd Duckett is not fishing, any info, what he's doing, in 2025.

  13. If you titled this video “slow news day”… how many views would it get? People are a lot like bass, they react to a distraction from their norm, no matter what the topic may be. Competition wouldn’t be the same without someone stirring the pot, in fishing and in any sport. That keeps ESPN on the air, and it keeps content creators on the web.

  14. Steve, you bring up a lot of complex stuff, and arcane to some of your members, I'm sure. My involvement with Pro fishing is subscriptions to Bassmaster and Bass Times, with the former about features, techniques, and products and the latter being primarily about the tournament scene of BM. I'm sure there were contentious episodes back in the days of Bill Dance, Rick Clunn, Tommy and Billy Martin, Hank Parker, et al., but the media didn't have the will or the outlets, AFAIK, to spread the shit. And there was relatively precious little money involved, compared to today's environment. In the FB/YT/Instagram world the drama just blows by so quick… I'm "old school" and I'm looking at the drama both from the point of view as a retired newspaper advertising manager, and a retired professional musician (which has remarkable similarities to being a pro angler.) So, after some liquid adult refreshment, I'm taking the long way around the world to get to my main question: There's somewhat real money involved nowadays. Have any pro anglers lawyered up in the negotiations with sponsors and/or organizations? Have any defamation or other liability issues been considered by anybody? Any legal brouhaha over contract violations re sponsors v. angler? Orgs and Sponsors surely must have legal representation at hand.

Oh well, it's gettin' a wee bit late, so cheers and "tight lines" man… whatever that means!! 🤣
