The END of TOURNAMENT BASS FISHING as we KNOW IT!!! (MLF BUYS FLW??)

Is this the END??? Bass fishing has changed so much lately that it’s almost not surprising that tournament fishing is evolving just as quickly – good or bad! As I’m sure you’ve read Major League Fishing (MLF) is buying FLW Outdoors one of the 2 biggest players in tournament bass fishing for the past 25 years. This continues the move by MLF to change the framework and standards of tournament fishing into a more bass friendly, network friendly, marketable content form. Like anything there are pros to the changes and there are cons, but one thing we can all agree on is you can’t stop change and seeing as the bass fishing tournament scene has been the same format going on 20+ years, it’s probably time to take a fresh look and mix it up.

  1. My opinion, you have way too many apps on your home screen. Oh about the format, MLF has the best idea, most total weight. The most unreal thing I have ever seen is Wheeler catching 130lbs in one day. Thats a good month for me. lol

  2. When I first heard about this, I thought "who's gonna want to see pro anglers catch 12 inch fish". So I watched a few episodes, and I was right! Pretty boring to catch little fish. I understand the concept that catching a "big" bass may have some luck involved, and catching "the most" bass could possibly be the better fisherman, it's just no fun to watch! Ask anybody that watches bass fishing on TV or You Tube and they will all say the same thing, they want to see someone catch a "great ole big un". That's one of the reasons your video's are so enjoyable. You catch "big" bass using different techniques, and that's what fishermen want to see. Thanks for opening a great discussion on the subject.

  3. I tried watching the MLF format but way too confusing and complicated. I'd rather watch the BASS format that has been tried and true, from a spectators perspective anyhow. But, the only thing I like about the MLF is they release fish at once. I think moving forward in the sport and ethically, releasing the fish at once is a better deal. I think there still could be a "weigh in" celebration with the crowd but without having to boat fish around all day and stress them out more for a traditional weigh in. I am and will always be a fan of the five biggest fish format. I really hope BASS can evolve and carry forward with this. I am glad the MLF anglers are happy and can do well. I just don't care for the format. Just my opinion. Great channel, Mickey!

  4. When it comes to MLF I like the regular Selects and Challenge Cup. The BPT to me is horrible I couldn't keep up with it at all. I think the reason I tried to watch it is because a lot of the guys I followed with the Elites went that route. I don't know how this MLF/FLW merger will go but I will keep an eye on it from a distance to see what happens. The Selects and Challenge Cups were made for television entertainment and I never thought of them as true tournament fishing.

  5. Flw is boring to watch live i watch but I will watch mlf 1st and it takes skill to find a school little or big and get numbers to make it a competition it makes you fish harder I like mlf and how they do this if you don't keep up your going to be left behind

  6. I think the only good thing that MLF has done was take most of the big name talent away from BASS and FLW and give guys who werent well known a chance to shine / make a name for themselves. I also like the old school5 fish format . Watching big name guys with a lot of talent sit there and throw turds ( senko) all day and catch 50 dinks is boring and takes absolutely no talent.

  7. Guys, literally the whole world is going to this way of handling competition. This is the "PARTICIPATION TROPHY" mindset at its finest! The crazy thing is you have pro fisherman actually saying that this is the way they have chosen to do things. They don't want to invest all there time into finding big fish, failing, and not getting paid. They want to show up and get paid whether they catch fish to win a tournament or not! This format allows just that! Literally anyone that calls their self a bass fisherman can go catch a boat load of 12" dinks. I have a 13 yr old son and I see this literally taking place in everything hes involved in, he plays high level travel baseball and is the starting catcher for a pretty good travel team. YES, theres participation trophies in baseball that you could pay up to $2000 per season to be able to play in. He enjoys playing video games such as Call of Duty…..LITERALLY the new Call of Duty has been made by the developers around the participation trophy mind set, the game has safe spaces for new player and less skilled players to hide and not get beat as badly. The developers have openly admitted and said they incorporated these things on purpose to not hurt players feelings……..GUYS! This SHIT has gotten out of hand. People even ALOT of adults believe that if earning skills, awards, accolades and recognition means you could get your feelings hurt or discourage you, we should just include those people anyway so they don't feel bad or get depressed! THAT SHIT IS INSANE!!!! If you just get hand outs to succeed, THEN WHY TRY TO GET GOOD AT ANYTHING? WHY TRY TO HOAN YOUR CRAFT OR LEARN TO BE TALENTED AT ANYTHING? Whether that be a hobby, a career, or some kind of important trade or skill. This Participation trophy mindset the world has adopted scares the shit out of me, look around and just see for yourself how many things in the world this mindset has been incorporated into and ask yourself what it means for the future. THAT NO ONE GETS THEYRE FEELINGS HURT? WHO GIVES A FUCK!!!?

  8. I stopped watching FLW in 2005. To me it seemed like a rigged tournament trail. FLW hand picked certain anglers and gave them FLW sponsorships along with boat and truck packages.

  9. It seems the MLF executive group are trying to create a culture of fear amongst the anglers!

See > https://youtu.be/sHgxqYcckRM < Skip to 15:00 to blow past the story of recent family loss.

This type of unethical behavior and intimidation tactics by leadership of a tournament organizer is not sustainable for sponsors or anglers. The fish rots from the head down, so this type of attitude will propagate throughout the whole org. The Anglers AND sponsors need take a stand and demand more integrity or put their dollars elsewhere.

  10. I think pro bass fishing has priced itself out of most people reach the average guy cannot afford to compete you have to be rich to get in I’d like to see an affordable team tournament trail best five fish together also two antlers can split the cost and maybe it would be affordable

  11. Good video and some good points. I like the conservation part of the MLF format, but how do you do that at smaller local levels? I've seen way too many dead Bass at local ramps, just not sure how to fix that without more government control over the events.

  12. They got it backwards. It should be MLF the first few days then a 5 fish limit sat and Sunday. I want weigh ins and suspense. Prove you can catch them early in the tournament then advance and prove you can catch the big girls!

  13. im ok with anyfishing as long as they NEVER fish in TEAMS because that would ruin it like basketball football baseball Hey guys no kneeling on the boats………please that would be the end

  14. Tournament fishing does not a attract broad fan base. Too much pomp and formality. That’s why MLF has been successful. They made professional fishing exciting for even the non-fishing viewer. I’m thinking, how can you disrupt the disruptor to become the next disruptor while the last disruptor’s boat is dragging along heavy equipment. 😳😂🤓😎

  15. I have an issue with getting rid of the FWC. Unlike the Classic, the FWC was like the end of season culmination. And then you had your grass roots guys from the All American and the Costa Championship, even kids from the College Championship. The FWC was accessible to anyone who worked hard enough to be on that same level as 40 of the top pros in the sport. With getting rid of it, what happens to the All American champion and the Costa champion and College champs??? Does it just stop there for them?
And then to the guys that worked their ass off to make it to the tour, who cut their teeth in BFLs and Costas and finally qualified for the Tour…Now you’re telling them there’s 80 guys who are distinctively better than them because they’re on the BPT? I think that’s maddd disrespectful.
Only positives are the addition of new Costa divisions and the lowering of BFL and Costa entries. From what I read in the press release they’ll have “the same great payouts”. I think the idea is that lower entry fees will make for more anglers thus compensating for the same payouts.

  16. From comments I’ve seen all over the internet. Is mass majority of bass fishing fans hate mlf format. I think anyone that knows anything about bass fishing can go to a lake and catch 100 1lbs. Catching numbers of fish in a tournament isn’t the hard part it’s the biggest that’s the hard part. I also fish bass tournaments so I know how difficult it is to catch the 5 biggest vs. numbers. If you’re a tournament angler you already know this. No more forest wood cup also hurts sad times in bass fishing. Or at least from a fan point of view

  17. I like the catch and release format, but Johnny Morris buying all the boat co's and now going to own all the formats , I don't like that one man has that much control over all of it;;;;;;;;;;;

  18. I like the MLF format, and I like 5 biggest format. Decreased fees, more air time, better fish care. All good things. However, I dont like the mixed format or loss of Forrest Wood Cup. Should keep the cup. Everyone is complaining about dinks fests. truth is that those people are 5 fish folks and are too busy whining to realize MLF was hugely popular and reached more homes/phones/etc than any other tour. Big time money. I would recommend MLF institute a 2lb minimum scorable bass. I believe that would cater to both types of fans and bring more biggins for a MLF format tournament.

  19. Hate mlf format. I havent found 1 person who likes this "more little fish" format. Hundreds of anglers and fans of fishing whom I have polled when I'm fishing the opens, Costas, and BFL's, no one watches that crap!

  20. Dude as long as you don’t change anything,we’ve got something good to watch…. I like the 5 fish but maybe some kinda slot to protect the fish like bring in 2 over 21”s and 3 between some sort of slot… video cool as always
