The Day I Stopped Thinking Small | Fishing the Delaware River

After reaching the trout fishing goals I’d set for myself, it was time for a new challenge.

This trip marks my first time seriously fishing the Delaware River—a legendary fishery that stretches from the Catskills to the Atlantic Ocean and is home to trophy smallmouth bass, walleye, muskie, striped bass, and countless other species.

The day didn’t go exactly as planned. I quickly realized my ultralight trout gear wasn’t going to cut it, but every new river starts with a lesson. Along the way I explored one of the Northeast’s most incredible waterways, reflected on my family’s connection to the Delaware during the American Revolution, and took the first step toward chasing bigger fish.

Sometimes the biggest catches begin with the smallest lessons.
