It's too hard to try to keep up with what is a bluegill what is a red ear what is a pumpkin seed what is a green sunfish what is a long ear and what's a hybrid. That's why we tend to lump all of them into one category. As for why we call them "bream" I have no idea. Generically calling them sunfish makes more sense.
Where I live we call them "sunfish" or "sunnies"….

Orrrrr…. you can catch a bluegill, then throw him out on a bottom Carolina rig and catch a giant bass lol. Of course…… that isn't for tournaments anglers, but it is fun.

Hooked a giant girl today after seeing shad start busting like crazy all of the sudden around 3pm. Threw a white/chartruse spinnerbait with a 4.8 keitech.
In the south we group bluegill and shell crackers together and call them bream. I call bluegill, gills.
