Summer Bass LOVE Offshore Rock Piles

Summer bass absolutely LOVE offshore rock piles… and Lake George proved it once again!

On this trip to Lake George, New York, the original plan was simple: use forward-facing sonar to hunt down offshore smallmouth cruising deep flats. As the day unfolded, the fish had other ideas.

Instead of finding big schools of giant bronzebacks, I started keying in on offshore humps, shoals, and main lake points, where a mix of rock piles and deep grass in 25–30 feet of water was holding fish. The result? Plenty of scrappy smallmouth and quality largemouth that had grouped up offshore around structure.

Summer is one of my favorite times to fish Lake George because bass begin feeding heavily on baitfish, and if you can locate the right offshore structure, you can put together an incredible day. The challenge is finding those key areas and understanding why the fish are there.
Beyond the fishing, Lake George is simply one of the most beautiful lakes in New York. Its crystal-clear water, incredible scenery, and healthy fishery make it a bucket-list destination for anglers.

Just remember that it’s also a major vacation lake, so if you’re fishing from a kayak or other small craft, keep a close eye on changing weather, boat traffic, and large pleasure boats.
