Summer Bass Fishing – 10 Bait Challenge!! Popper, Spinnerbait, Crankbait, Swimbait…

Matt tied on 10 different baits from swimbaits to crankbaits to a Ned Rig and he’s going to see how many bass he can catch (and a few bonus species too!) We’re in South Dakota on Lake Oahe for the first time ever. The plan was to do a “lake breakdown” but we quickly realized the bite was excellent and our time would be better spent having fun doing a challenge! We’ve only got a few hours before we need to get on the road to Wyoming but Matt is confident he can catch bass on all 10 baits, let’s find out if he can do it before the Pike and Walleye chew them to pieces!

The 10 baits Matt chose represent virtually every style of fishing you can do while bass fishing. From ultra finesse, to serious power, to topwater, its going to take a lot of adaption to get it done. He always prefers to start by power fishing and today is no different… He begins with Megabass’s Dark Sleeper, a fun little swimbait that is easy to use. After the Sleeper produces Matt moves on to a Keitech, a squarebill, and right on down the list he moves.

It really doesn’t get difficult until he arrives at the finesse baits. While that might seem counter intuitive, not knowing the lake makes it difficult to slow down and fish individual pieces of cover. It takes longer than expected but one by one the finesse fish fall, leaving only a topwater popper. Its midday, hot, and bluebird sky but the smallmouth of South Dakota did not dissapoint, ultimately giving Matt the 10th bass he was looking for.

We hope you enjoy the video! Below is a breakdown of the 10 baits (and applicable heads) that Matt used to complete his challenge.

  1. Another great video. I just caught my pb league figure 8โ€™ing a bull shad 4×4 at sunset, had no idea it could work on them. Wouldnโ€™t have caught it with watching your videos.

  2. Can you reference what part of the lake you were on for this filming or how far up from the dam you were? Also on many parts of that lake and the lakes below the dam, the preferred way to catch smallies and walleyes are with bottom bouncers with live bait or pulling plugs. Very few people are using the lures you did. There are some smaller bass tournaments on that river also but its not as popular as the walleye ones as you learned.

  3. Please come to Mtn Home AR and breakdown our lakes. I would love to hear what you have to say about both norfork lake and bull shoals lake!

  4. Great video and series Matt!
There's one thing that makes my jaw drop every time and I'm sure this has been brought up before but… It seems that in the US, nearly all right handed fishermen use right handed reels switching the rod over after every single cast (cast with right, turn the handle with right too). But with spinning gear you have the handle on the left! (… what makes a lot more sense).
Here in mainland Europe right handed fishermen only use left handed reels. Cast with right, spin the handle with left, just like with spinning gear. Where does the illogical and inefficient hand-switching with baitcasters come from?!? ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Man, I wish I wouldโ€™ve known you were fishing here! I wouldโ€™ve LOVED to meet you guys. I work for SD Game, Fish, & Parks at the Missouri River Fisheries Center. I help manage the fishery on Oahe. I can tell you this, we definitely have some GIANT smallies in Oahe. 4-6lb fish are common here, but go deep after the spawn to chase smelt and ciscos in the cooler water. I was lucky enough to stick a couple good ones this spring on Magdrafts. It makes me very happy to hear such a glowing review of the fishing here, from someone like yourself. Believe it or not, right now is some of the toughest fishing of the year! Thank you guys for all that you do!

  6. Matt, you're such a great teacher, you should see if you can get on MyOutdoorTV! As a newbie bass fisherman I'm super happy to find a channel based in California. I usually fish saltwater and recently started getting into bass and my head is spinning with all the gear and techniques! You make it so simple even I can understand!

  7. I have family that fish Oahe daily. All walleye all the time smallies are a nuisance fish when I come to fish with them Iโ€™m a bass guy gotta be throwing stuff all the time. Great fishin even greater people there glad you got to experience South Dakota

  8. @TacticalBassin … I think you should do a video on caring for fish and protecting your local fisheries. Was watching your video from years ago on rigging swimbaits and you mentioned not having hooks on the belly of swimbaits cause they kill fish. I think a good reminder of caring for fish would be good for everyone.

  9. Are you not concerned that the barb of your hooks might damage the insert on the eye of your spinning rods (and in turn damage your line) when you hook them to store them that way?

  10. Lake Oahe. Did you know, aloha means hello AND goodbye?
And "Haole" is the Hawaiian way of saying, "Please be my friend and hang out with me!" It's I huge insult if you refuse. A slap on their butt is how you say, "I will honor your request, Bro". (Smack!)
Then the Hawaiians will all come out and have a big luau with hula girls, spitting fire, and of course, Pakalolo. It might not look very good but it's strong enough to make poi palatable.
And don't forget to tell them, "Kook in and out of the water" says aloha from the mainland (USA) and he said for you to hook me up.

  11. Thanks for doing these video's and showing new baits to use. Glad you are feeling well and traveling America! I live in Illinois near St. Louis Missouri, but if you ever get up north into Minnesota, go to Marcel Minnesota and fish Lake Northstar, Caribou and Spider! They are filled with Large and Small mouth bass, I mean 4-10 pounders and plenty of pike and muskee. Keep the video's coming, I look forward to trying new baits out! Thanks Matt and Tim!
