Striped Bass Fishing with a New York City View

My final fishing trip of 2019 was filled with striped bass being pulled out of the Hudson River on bloodworms. I fished from Pier A in Hoboken New Jersey for a few hours mainly targeting striped bass and hoping for some other species. The Hudson River is home to a plethora of different species all year long, winter included.

  1. I fished the Hudson on the Manhattan side (@125th St) with almost the same exact rod/reel combo as well as using both rigs, except that my bait was shrimp and bunker. Never got a single bite, even though I fished it >20 different times at times ranging from late at night to mid-morning! I even came down to southern Manhattan a couple of times to no avail…

Any tips? What time of day was this? Would you expect the same results in March/April/May? Does being a couple of miles upriver even matter?

Also, I’m planning to fish the east river soon from Manhattan… any tips?

  2. I fish the Hudson too- this past summer I hooked a Spanish Mackerel near Irvington, NY- have u ever heard of this happening before? Just curious how other fishermen in the area think how rare it actually is
