When throwing light lures, which is mostly what I do, I put the line under my thumb and release. Unbelievable accuracy!
Randy i like your advise at times but literally none of the pros back reel.
More misinformation in this video than the main stream media! Always use your drag!
Do a backreling tutorial. It seems like nonsense to me, but I'd like to see another perspective. My opinion may change if I can get a better idea of what the technique is and when to use it.
Do people really use their right index finger to flip the bail?
I backreeled a king mackerel that went out 100 yards. I didn't even want to reel him in after that 🤣.
Went into this video expecting to disagree with you, but I echo everything you are saying. The ONLY time I use that anti reverse is when I hang that hook in the keeper and put the rod away.
Hey Randy, Clueless Newbie here,
How about a video showing you catching a fish and using this amazing back reeling technique of yours
You have had a lot of heartbreak if you are back reeling don't tell people to make the same mistake you're making
Im 64 years old, and for decades my fishing buddies chastised for for lock down on my drag and back reeling. "You're going to loose that fish " !! Now time has proven them wrong. Like you said, I've caught monster fish while bluegill, walleye, crappie and Saugerties fishing with a open face reel. They never have. Sssnap!!
I’m sorry but you are wrong about that
Do a video for us old timers that are getting cataracts. What type of line that would help us see and don't say anchor rope. Lol
How to tie your hook on if there is nobody there to help you.aybe clips , or safety pins. I'm serious. Any ideas will help.and I'm sure you have other tips , and safety tips. I am really getting bad in my Right Eye. Any suggestions. Love to fish ,don't want to trouble anglers , like to be able to do things on my own. I will be 70 soon.
Well…. Interesting take. I can't say I agree. But. I will give it a try before I bash the idea.
I love your spinning reel videos for reminders and better understanding. No offense but I'll forever disagree with the backbreaking. I've found even mid-level spinning reel drags to be reliable. That's just me.
I trade off with 2 or 3 fingers in front of the reel post. It helps alleviate discomfort during the day.
I'm confident in the next ten or so years someone will come up with a design that obsoletes current spinning reel designs
I worked on a commercial with willie mays one time and in the scene he was fishing from a dock with a spinning reel. He had it upside down. I gladly showed him the correct way to hold it.
Stop acting like there's only one way to hold a rod. You make yourself look like a total jackass. And after watching your other rod videos, you shouldn't be calling anybody a "newbie". YOu don't even know the difference between rod actions and powers. LOL
Randy is the only person using the word "newbie" in 2025. 🤣
Do you back reel a bait caster ???
When a professional bass fisherman is an amateur with a spinning reel…
Dumbest shit I ever heard ! Most of your views are from folks like me who want to see the comments.
Worst advice ever and somehow you calk it a fact. You must be using some poor quality fishing reels if you don't trust drag. If backreeling was the way to fight fish how come Shimano the biggest producer of fishing reels doesn't have that option on their reels anymore? I have never seen anybody using backreeling intead of drag.
Not using a properly set drag is insane
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YA BACK REALING ON A 50LB WAHOO
Now you forever lost me
good bye
Are you just trolling or are you seriously telling people to back reel?
Ever since going to braid to fluoro leader, I have eliminated the line twist you get on spinning reels with straight fluoro or mono. Would I prefer to use those lines straight? Sure, if they didn’t twist up. No twist with braid on a spinning outfit makes my fishing day more enjoyable and productive because I don’t have to worry about my line twisting. No problems using a fluoro leader. Just make sure to tie a good connecting knot and retie it after a while…especially after hauling in some fish.
A couple winters ago, I was fishing my Megabass Ito 110 jerkbait when I hooked up with a 6-8 pound striper. After the hook up and initial run by the fish, I quickly realized I had a striper and not a big spotted bass. My first thoughts to myself was “ don’t lose that $25.00 lure”, and then my thoughts were, “ I need to try out Randy’s back reeling technique while fighting the striper”.
I can tell you two things. I got back my favorite jerk bait and that striper made me “ His bitch”. I had never gotten my hand so brutally slapped by the rotating handle while trying to keep up with his powerful runs. After three very painful back reeling attempts, I clicked on the anti reverse and simply set the drag and boated the striper.
I can back reel on smaller bass, but on larger fish, it is difficult for me. This is just the experience I observed.
Oh my dude your in left field
Makes sense. Don't know if I can do it or not. Gonna give it a shot this year.
I disagree. Your whole hand should be in front of the reel seat. If not, your rod is top-heavy, not balanced. I have relied on my drag on my Quantum PT and Lew's reels for decades and have NEVER lost a fish due to drag.
I cast like you hold it. But Especially when I am finesse fishing and especially swimming crappie jigs threw tree tops I have my hand up on the rod when retrieving or atleast my pointer finger. Cant detect alot of small ticks. It works for me. Keep them coming
Always good for a laugh if nothing else. Thanks, Randy.
Lmfao.
I love how you wanna bash the elite series guy when you could never come close to qualifying at this point … shits a joke
Aside from how much fun it is watching and feeling a fish pull drag I see where you’re coming from. I have a few really nice KastKing spinning reels with the reverse switch. I’ll give your tip a try but I’ll say this as a talking point. Maybe the reason all the old school angers had to reel in reverse is because dragbrake technology wasn’t what it is today. Randy you’re on point of how to hold a spinning rig that’s a fact.
The number of times ive seen people putting spinning reels on casting rods and reeling it backwards, etc.
It works for some people. Not everybody. And a lot of reels do not have the selector switch. Personally, I just set my drag to be tight enough and can easily adjust it while fighting fish if I need to. It comes down to preference. Good video though, Randy.
If you buy quality reels with quality drags, you can infact use the drag. I have caught big bass on light leaders as well as 12lb+ steelhead on 3lb leader, 30lb+ salmon with 10lb leader relying on my drag. Good luck back reeling on steelhead or salmon without breaking knuckles. If you have to back reel, your reel and drag isn't a quality product. People use their reels how they want. This video is matter of opinion.
Thank you – learned quite a bit !
More bites because reeling backwards? 🤔 You reel backwards after the bite.
I also doubt that you can beat the reactiontime of a drag. 😉 If you close your drag you can brake your line while setting the hook. An open drag might prevent this and as others mentioned before, backreeling increases the chance of to much slack in your line.
But if it works for you, great. 👍
Good information, too many clickbait titles, Randy. Backreeling is a great technique for anyone who wants to learn it. If I don't do it, I am a clueless newbie? Titles like this usually make me not click. I figured I would let you know before I unsubscribe.
I buy Daiwa's because of the anti-reverse
Back reeling allows me to apply just apply the right pressure
Especially when I forget to set the drag correctly 🙂
If drag is good on a bait caster why is it not good on a spinning reel?
Ive been fishing for all kinds of stuff, big or small. Something I don't do? Backreel. It increases the chances of you putting too much slack in your line, and if you are catching fish like Shark and bull drum, that can lead to a lost. By the way. For beginners getting into Saltwater fishing? Good luck finding a spinning reel with an anti reverse knob. Its just another area for salt to get into your reel and mess it all up.
