How To

STOP Fishing LIPLESS CRANKBAITS Like This (4 Lipless Mistakes)

Lipless crankbaits, like Rat-L-traps, are some of the best all times lures that any bass fisherman can own. However, I do feel like in recent years they have been put on the back burner in fishing.

There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to fishing a lipless crankbait. One thing that a lot of people tend to do is assume that all Lipless cranks are created equal. Not only do the have different sounds and shapes, but they also dive differently and fall differently.

I think that a lot of people also assume that lipless cranks are only for fishing in grass situations and that is just not true. Fishing on rock flats for smallmouth bass is one of my favorite ways to catch bass!

BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

  1. Great video! One tweak I like to make to my lipless cranks is I take some wire cutters and cut off the front most hook on the front treble. So it’s got 5 hooks instead of 6. I find that it makes it wayyy less likely to snag and doesn’t seem to affect my hookup ratio. Since when it’s moving that front hook hugs up to the body, I just eliminate the hook that’s hanging down pointing forward.

  2. I thought the spinner replacing the back hook was my original idea, whoops. I never considered wood using that though, I’ll have to. I did find that the Colorado blade was a bit much for it and the action was negligible. But when I put the willow blade on the wobble returned. It’s a fish catcher. Love it late spring.

  3. Tyler you never talk about how you attach the lures to your line? Do you use snap swivels or not? What baits do you or do you not use a swivel? Last what knots do you use when attaching your lures to your line? Love your channel bro!!

  4. I was fishing a high school tournament alone bouncing a one knocker off of wood, and sure I got hung up a lot, but the big ones were hitting it off the wood too. So I definitely think they should be fished around wood, just be prepared to lose a few

  5. Lipless are my go-to if I'm exploring, that or a paddle tail swimbait on a weighted hook. ratlin vibes are my favorite, either the bass color or shad imitation. Red eye shad works well too from Strike king, and rattle traps. shoot ive done well on ozark trail lipless. if they are super finnicky i switch to minnow style pencil suspending baits.

  6. A great edge bait! Love them on a flat. I also use the old Brand Name trap as a sound stimulate to activate a bite! When pulling up the my area, I may be planning to fish a rig, flip, spinner bait or anything. I throw a trap at least once or twice then start my planned technique. I seem to get more bites!

  7. Eff that noise, everyone in MN is going hard finesse and I've been pulling em in power fishing cranks, squarebills and lipless. All about being different!

  8. The EWG Mustad triple grips are an absolute must change I make on most every lipless and jerkbait bait I have. I have noticed a significant difference in getting those fish into the boat and not losing them. The moderate to slow bend rod action is also a must as it reduces the chances of you from pulling the bait out of the fish's mouth. I built my own lamiglass composite rod specifically for this type of fishing and the first time I took it out was in a local SC tournament in February. Had 24 lbs of fish with a 8.24 lmb (second big fish of tournament) using that rod. Great video, it does confirm a lot of what I already do, so great job.

  9. I just saw this video. I live in Texas and only fish ponds from shore. You are correct as to how effective they can be. I use the stop and go retrieve. I never tried the yo yo method but will try it in the future. I appreciate what you do.

  10. I've always loved fishing lipless cranks..caught some good size smallies on them earlier this season. Just recently drove an hour to the closest tackle shop and picked up a Berkley Warpig along with other baits, but I love crankbaits in general, but the lipless can and will catch some bass.

  11. Composite rod all day. If I'm ripping it, just go to a longer one with a tad more leverage. Since I've switched to composite cranking rods, my hook to land ratio is outstanding ~ Peace ~

  12. I love the lipless but after a while the bite started to die off in the body of waters I fished so I went to a Glo-Pro soft body lipless that I got in a monthly subscription tackle box and it obviously it was silent and it destroyed the fish the rest of that year and the following year in those bodies of water.

  13. Nice video. I like to fish the spro Aruku shad similar to the way a blade bait or a spoon is worked (vertically). I have had quite a bit of success fishing it around suspended fish in deep, cold water.
