I tie my own skirted baits. On all my moving baits, swimjigs, chatterbaits, buzzbaits, and spinnerbaits, I use red denier to tie the skirt. It may not sound like much, but i feel that little hint of red behind the head has increased my hookup ratio. Especially with spinnerbaits! I believe that the bass are drawn to the blades, but as they close in, they see the red. Perhaps they think it's the gills of a baitfish, so they target the middle of the body instead of the blades. I seem to hookup with a lot more of the "swiping" fish, allowing me to drop the trailer hook and keep the bait more weedless. Of course, a more weedless bait allows you to fish heavier cover more efficiently, thus aids in increasing the amount of strikes as well.
For those who don't tie their own, just use some red dye to dye the first 1/4" or so of your trailer where it meets up with the head. This will do the same thing.
Btw- feathering works great when your in warmer days, warmer water, where you’re working the bait faster – then on a pause it should have a pretty good wobble going w the rattles and weight transfer system so they see that (I like a small red w some tinsel feather or white black combo) and they see the bait stopped but since you were ripping it that feathers came together and on the pause they starting opening and flaring out this can get you those fish that wouldn’t of committed otherwise. But it can’t be big and gaudy. I like the strike king popper rear treble size feathers, I won’t use the hook cuz it’s too big but I’ll take the red adhesive off the feather and reapply it to a KVDJ200 or lucky craft slender pointer where I’m ripping it over submerged grass..I’ve always done that especially with my perch baits because baby perch have a very translucent tail (all their fins are somewhat prettty translucent) white is why a feather works great on perch imitating baits
I like the spike it pens, I’ll draw things like boobs and naked women on my swimbaits and sometimes under my top waters to get them to commit when they see boobs 😂
LOL Red Dot and gill stripes, been doing this for years. It fades quickly and is something you need to maintain.
Lol… crawls
Great tip I'll keep in mind! 2 of my 3 biggest bass were on a cheap popper a called bleeding shad with no feather. I have gotten a few more poppers with a feather but the cottonwood is covering the river here so top water is on hold for the moment. 😢 I will remember this though! I've also heard to use red hooks for a trigger. I never tried that yet.
I always imagine bass making videos, saying stuff like "guys, if you see a feather on the back of something in the water….EAT IT!!!" 🤣🤣🤣
*claws
I’ve been doing this for a few years now and it works. I’m just sad I’m not the only one that does it 😂 I always saw guys dipping tails on lures and having bright colors at the end of a bait so I figured it would work even better if it was at the front. I paint the top front of my top waters and frogs too in order for me to see it better. I’ve tied some red flashibou on the front hook to look like entrails too. Don’t know if it works but anything that gives me more confidence can’t be bad.
I really like these instructional talks you’re doing. Great information. Thanks.
I agree with having a “target”. My smallmouth bass catch ratio on a Whopper Plopper 90 T1000 (chartreuse pectoral fins) is much higher than on other Whopper Plopper colors. Also, I noticed those catches were primarily hooked on the front hook hanger. Definitely makes a difference.
Tyler, we've got to find something else to say in these videos other than "With that being said" or "A lot of times", or a few other things.
You know, I never really thought about this outside of feathered trebles. Makes sense. 🤔
Great Idea! I'm thinking of getting some small round colored stickers from the hobby shop.
I'll be honest with you and I mean this in the best way possible. I wasn't looking for any more fishing channels to follow but your vids kept popping up and I'd watch a few but not sub and then after a while I was like this guys got some really good tricks and tips so I'm glad YouTube kept feeding me your vids in my algorithm! I'm subscribed now btw! Lol
Great information
