The black spots on bass are now known as Blotchy Bass Syndrome.

Yes we can believe scientists! Just like Dr. Fucksee! They always tell the true. Science is god……
Ive been fishing since I was 5, Im 51, and I've fished for every species under the sun, both saltwater and freshwater, ponds, and lakes, and perhaps you can direct me to one of your videos that may encompass this question.
Im a disabled veteran and I am unable to even buy a cheap 2500.00 boat, so I mainly bank fish, and it's def hard, but fun, do you have any tips on perhaps what to look for when I'm fishing..no fish finder, so it's all from eyesight, and what lures are good for spring Pre-Spawn?
by the way, love all your videos, keep them coming!!

Lake St.Clair in the spring and you’ll catch a bunch. I think they’re gorgeous myself.
Interestingly, Cichla Temensis do have these black spots over their body too. Post spawning stress cause virus attack?
Excellent
Hey Tyler, the first time I caught one of these fish I was on Lake Robinson in SC in October ‘23 and the water was extremely hot like upper 80s/low 90s. I’m a huge science person also I’m trying lay out every detail I remember.
Keep polluting our waters
Erie and St Clair are loaded with them.
Wonder why some crappie have a black line from nose to tail looks like some one colored them with a sharpie could that be the same?
I have caught 1000's of smallmouth in the Columbia River over the decades and have not seen one of these yet. Would like to catch one of these blotchy bass just to see it and say i did.
I caught a few of these bass each summer on Lake ontario. Pretty cool markings on some

Never seen any with black spots til early 90s. That have not always had them.
I'm 63 and I can tell you my buddy who works at home depot believes this happens when you got those live scope shooting them rays at the population of bass congregated in one area kind of like the Flux capacitor theory
It's melanosis. It's nothing new. It has been around forever.
Caught a bunch of smallies with these spots this Fall in one particular location. I'd been wondering if it was contained to specific populations, so I could estimate movement of certain schools in my fishery. I take pics each time now in case it helps me identify the same fish later.
Fishagedon
The last largemouth I caught. the right side was full of them but the left side didn't have a mark on it. So I thought it was from it's surroundings. Wrong again.
Dale Hollow is full of bass with these black spots. Wildlife officers were taking notes and pictures of them at a BFL weigh in last spring
Which brings up that if you kill or eat all the black spotted bass with the virus will it eliminate the virus?
Never caught one in a lake, always in a river.
We have seen them on lake Fork
The individuals I fish with have always figured it to be a coloration issue. Not a birth mark. We usually see it on small mouth in the clarion and allegeheny rivers. I'm sure it is found elsewhere, but these two rivers is where I see it the most commonly. Each fish caught appeared to be healthy and fought just as hard as any other fish .
Theres a marsh off of lake erie that is ABSOLUTELY LOADED with these bass with black spots. Ive always been curious moreso fascinated.
I'm waiting on the "no-livescope" guys to start calling it radiation poisoning from the emissions of radiation into the water by using all these unfair graphs

Wierd thing is I only see it on bass in the winter
…. Thought it was a prespawn thing. Only on largemouth too
Thank you!!!
So its probally like the Melanism and the black panther or something in the same way
I've noticed that there are more black spotted bass some years than others. There were a lot more in the Susquehanna. In the Allehgheny, there are very few. I don't know that I ever see any black spots on smallies in the smaller rivers/creeks like French Creek or Oil Creek. I can't remem ever seeing any on largemouth
I thought it was BLM had gotten ahold of them…
It's not just bass. I've caught trout with blotches as well.
USA USA your the MAN Tyler . Keep up the great videos
Randy Blaukat says it’s a deadly side effect of forward facing sonar….

I'm 62 years old and have been fishing since I was 7 and I will tell you that when I was young I never saw any of these fish with black spots so this is something that has developed over the years. I read an article a long time ago where the author theorized these spots were hormone imbalances in some fish and were triggered by "filtered sewage" that contained urine from women that were taking birth control pills (which work by altering hormone balances). The author theorized that some fish were more sensitive to these very diluted levels of birth control in our waterways and as time goes on the levels gradually rise and the number of spotted fish increased. This would explain this phenomenon progressing from nothing to what it is today, but the virus theory might make more sense because I seem to be seeing less of these black spotted fish now than say 5 or 10 years ago.
I wonder if it effects the sensitivity of the lateral line?
Did it start in Chyna?
Ive always heard from fellow fisherman that it means the fishery/bass are healthy
Every bass I’ve caught with blk dots was a healthy fat fish any season it seemed
I’m retired now and have been fishing over 65 years and I never saw these spots until the past 10 years or so,but, we all know what happens when our water ways get polluted and until we stand up against corporate polluters we will continue to see viruses and diseases in all fisheries and waters… I can’t believe more anglers , especially tournament anglers aren’t doing more to support the EPA and pay attention to who they are voting for….. many of these pollutered waters are making humans sick
I appreciate you discovering this information and clearing up the (“wive’s tales)

Did the study say anything about the virus being passed along to another while in a live well while fishing a tournament?
They must not be in the lakes I fish, this is the first I've ever heard of this, strange.
I seem to catch more in the winter than any other time, coincidence?
I've caught quite a few. They're always unique which makes it interesting.
Melanistic bass
