SAM RAYBURN BASS FISHING REPORT FOR MAY (Todd Castledine Fishing)

This is my first Sam Rayburn fishing report I’ve ever done and I tried to make it as real as possible. I think most reports that are done are very generic and don’t give a big enough overview of what’s going on and how things are changing. I try to provide a real report of how my days have gone, what to look for, and how the bass are behaving to different areas of the lake as well as how they are reacting to the shad. I don’t cover everything because I didn’t do everything so these are not the only ways to catch them but they are how I attacked the lake in 2 days.

  1. Great video, keep it up. Would you be interested in doing a guide trip $$$ (separate boats), I just started fishing Rayburn and it's definitely overwhelming. I've caught a few 5 & 6 lbers recently, I live in Houston, but it's worth the drive.

  2. Being a pretty good crankbait angler, what rod power and length do you use? I’m about to drop some good money and can’t decide on a med-heavy (which I think I should get) but I’m leaning toward a 7’6 heavy over the 7’4 med-heavy.

  3. It’s nice to hear the honest truth about the state of the lake. Recommendation would be what area of lake north, mid, south ect. We all know how each part of the lake like you mentioned can be totally different at certain times! As always great videos and information for Rayburn!

  4. Good Report! I am really catching them good right before dark on fast moving bates. Keep the videos coming, good job. And you are a bad ass sight fisherman.! best I ve ever seen.

  5. Must be coming out of the post spawn funk, it sucked 3 weeks ago. Fished friday, Monday Tuesday late April. Friday found a popping perch bite for 23 ish. Monday and Tuesday struggled to catch 10 fish a day period. I just attributed it to the post spawn funk, or I just suck haha.

  6. really like this kind of discussion, hope you can keep it up..been really missing Rayburn and hope to get there soon..are all the parks open now?..the campgrounds are so nice

  7. Good report! Would like more specific areas of the lake to be reported on other than we did not fish the south end. Not asking for "spots" just more general locations would be nice. Look forward to seeing more.

  8. Sensational perspective on this shad spawn … does this full moon affect the movement shad travel … frequency of these rains …. and last … crappie fished the south end and limited w/ 50 then motored to the dam … and wow " bass activity there … shad A jumping … keep up the presentations …. really enjoy .. 9. Hey Todd, I was out there Monday Tuesday. Flipping bushes with senko qtr once. We tried a lot of other stuff. I'm not from there. Only second time there. Could you explain how you are fishing the topwater and moving baits?

  10. Loved this and the content. Easy to listen to and visualize in my mind things and places. Like the deal on lake level and water clarity also bald points with vegetation on the flanks. This makes it easier for us weekend warrior/ fun fishermen to start a breakdown search process. Please keep this up, especially as conditions change. Also to note, that "post spawn funk" might just be an old wives tale. Thanks Todd !

  11. Todd, with these cool nights we've been having do you think the shad spawn will run a little further into May than most years? I live in North Central Louisiana but I try to equate what's going on with ya'll at Rayburn and put it to use over here, Caney Lake, wich is about the same distance North from the coast as Rayburn and Toledo. I haven't been on the water much lately because with the quarantine stuff every day on our lakes has been like a weekend! Been doing a lot of yard work lol, but I'm gettin' the itch, fixing to get back after em! I know over here on these lakes, most years after the 1st of May the early morning shad spawn deal is pretty much done, they are usually hard and heavy during April, and of course most years the nights are lot warmer than they have been this year.

  12. Ok just a couple of things, 1). You’re intro is getting way too long. Shortening it would help. 2). You’re right about most reports are very generic and usually a copy and paste from several years of the same things. 3). When you’re saying you threw a fry then what color ? Some times that’s a key. 4). The information you’re adding is good content, keep adding the weather, wind and other factors of your day, that’s also information that no reports give. I am not complaining just pointing out things for you that could help your channel. Thanks for taking the time to give the reports and the detailed information.

  13. Been fishing Rayburn since 87 but took me many many years to figure out, and still learning, why my fishing wasn't translating into tournament paydays. Simply put, I didn't thank outside the box enough. 20 – 3 pounders is fun but also a long disappointing broke ride home . 15 pounds don't cut it at Rayburn. Awesome to see a guy like you that have alot of reasons to keep thangs to yourself trying to educate other anglers with honest tips and techniques that are real and relatable and many of the same that has helped me become a better angler. This is the first time and probably the last that I will ever comment on any type of social media but felt compelled to let you know that your doing it the right way and although it's getting better we need more guys like you. Your passion for fishing is contagious and your shared knowledge and attention to detail is appreciated. With all the social media outlets, what your doing is almost expected and many take for granted. I know the hard work and dedication it takes to do what your doing and it's not easy. This got alot longer than intended and a little cheesy with the props but can't emphasize enough to the younger anglers that this kind of stuff didn't exist for the most part not to long ago. Details about lures and techniques were top secret. Nobody wanted to talk, share or educate. Take advantage of what your seeing and hearing you will thank him one day.

  14. Awesome video. We are gonna be at Powell all weekend normally we are around the 147 area. But gonna give buck Bay Area a shot since never have fished that side of the lake.

  15. Great report. You mentioned that you’re not one to sit on a school- you’d rather try to figure out as much as you can. I’d like to hear more about that process progression. I’d love to hear any tips on Ray Roberts too. I see others whacking them, but I’m catching 1 fish a day.

  16. I agree with a lot of what you’re saying. Was on Rayburn yesterday and found a lot of the things your talking about to be true. The big deep schools and offshore fish aren’t showing up like they’re supposed to be 🤷🏼‍♂️

  17. I fished some really good looking stuff in Norris and had one bite in a mile of some of the best looking hay grass I’ve seen out there. I caught a ton in five fingers just south in some very similar looking stuff🤷🏻‍♂️

  18. Great Video and It's always good to hear how other people are doing on the lake. We fished it last Thurs. and Fri. and didn't do that well. I'm going to try it again next week , hopefully with better results. Thanks Todd and keep them coming.

  19. Hey I just want to say I hope you didn't think we was trying to crowd you in that deep spot you caught a ton at we fished them the day before and caught probably 100 bass off of that school but yeah sorry.

  20. Wow! An actual fisherman willing to talk publicly about his fishing experiences…how refreshing and unique. I live in southeast Louisiana and have never fished Rayburn but still enjoyed your monologue. Would love to hear a breakdown of Toledo in a similar fashion. I make 2-3 trips there per year and always feel like I'm just figuring it out by the time I leave. Would love to have a heads up before I go on what to avoid. Keep up the good videos.

  21. Love the videos! Todd complains that reports always mention fishing grass edges…Todd talks about fishing grass edges… 😉 Just busting your chops, boss. Need another BAnger Management!!!

  22. Thanks for the report. I agree the generic fishing reports you see are copy and paste most of the time. Look back five years on the same time of the same month and the report is almost exactly the same. Your report is more useful. Great video!

  23. Completely off topic from what you just talked about, but I’m having a little situation lol. I’m ready to purchase a new trolling motor, mainly for the spot lock feauture. I have a 18 foot aluminum bass Tracker. Just wandering your opinion on if I should go with a motorguide or a minn Kota. Been looking at the Xi5 and the Terrova. Any help would be appreciated. Huge fan by the way, love your content.
