Radio Tracking Huge Bass

Today I share with you what I learned the day I got to see John Hope using Radio Telemetry to Track a Huge Bass, a 15.50 on Lake Fork. One of the most eye opening days I’ve ever spent on the water that changed how I fish permanently. John was tracking “Missy”, the 15.5 pound trophy caught my Fork Guide Dennis Canada that at the time was one of the 10 biggest fish that had ever been caught in Texas. He showed me how sound and motion affects her behavior, and how difficult it is to approach a truly huge largemouth bass, you will think differently about your fishing after you hear my experiences that day.

For more about my day with him and John’s work see the article I wrote for Gary Yamamoto’s Inside Line Magazine here https://bit.ly/3cGtwnJ

  1. Don't spill the beans Ken! My dad had never caught a 10 pounder until about 12 years ago. He is an extremely accomplished local angler e.g. Mr. Bass every year in his club, won every local event many times over, won and did well at the state level. He considered turning pro at one point, but didn't want to take the risk. He always ran graphs and flashers at at all times. Well, he retired all those years back and became extremely tight with his money. His graph and flasher broke and he never fixed them. He also started fishing during the week exclusively. Long story short, he has since caught over a dozen 10 plus pound fish.

  2. Fish the moment constantly catches large fish off water.. seems his technique works for him. His experience is different from yours or mine for that matter but, that what makes bass fishing great. So many different ways to catch them.

  3. Great info! It's a lot like hunting a big East Texas buck.
I will certainly be more stealth in my fishing now but a lot of questions arise about scouting, or practice.
Like how can I search for fish, use my electronics, trolling motor, etc., and be efficient?

  4. Ken, If I am not wrong, John was up on Truman Reservoir in 1989/90 tracking Big fish out of Bucksaw Point Resort. John Mangum owned the resort and hosted John while he was there. I remember hearing about the project from John Mangum when he and I were out on the water pre-fishing for a Penn Reel event. Thanks for the info and the memory recall. That was the same time I saw a Slugo for the first time. John Mangum had it given to him by a BassMaster Pro to try.

  5. Bought the book today!! Knowledge is the key. TTT sent me an e-mail showing results, Your buddy's Ken came in 3rd. Where is Dicky?, well I hope. Is it possible when a bass becomes eligible for old folks home they become loners? It's been my experience Bass school according to size, so maybe after awhile they graduate and leave the school???

  6. Drove right over the top of a brushpile in 15 ft. Tossed out a marker buoy. First cast, i caught a 10.79 , second cast a 7.5lber. They are accustomed to boat noise, they hear it everyday.

  7. Thanks KEN for some very in depth information and KNOWLEDGE!!! I knew you were a good fisherman by watching your channel but I didn't realize how good you have been for a long time!! Great video!!! You now have a good admirer!!! THANKS!!!
