Nothing Beats a Tuesday Night Tournament
Back in May I came home from a dead last finish at Santee Cooper, drove straight to Eagle Mountain, and entered a Tuesday night tournament to fix what was broken. The plan that night was to put the swimbait down and finally learn the little urchin bait everybody was beating me with. That plan lasted about four minutes.
Three months later, this is the last Tuesday nighter of the summer, on the same lake, and the urchin is in my rotation for real now. Funny how that works.
The lake made us earn this one. Heat index 106, water temperature 89.5, and a full moon sitting right on top of the whole thing. We started shallow with a frog on the reed points and the entire deal came down to shade lines two feet wide. Most guys run that reed stretch and never see them. Caught a three pounder out of ten inches of water off one, trolling motor scraping bottom the whole time.
Then we went back to the deep brush piles that have been loaded with giants all summer. Three or four eight to ten pounders followed the swimbait and nipped at the Coike and not one of them ate. First night all summer I didn’t put a big one in the boat. That’s what a full moon and 90 degree water will do to you.
Ty and John came in with 22-39 and a 7-15 big bass in a three and a half hour tournament. Getting my butt whooped by the locals on my home lake and I absolutely love it. That’s the whole reason to do this.
