  1. Good advice and well taken.. But I've bought plenty of bait cast Johnny Morris combos from Bass Pro for under $180 .. All medium heavy and either 7ft or 7"2 .. never had a problem.. I live in Florida and fish Okeechobee and Kissimmee alot

  2. Well, color me stupid. I was under the (pretty well educated) impression that the faster action, the softer the tip but quicker it gets into the backbone. So hard to know though. Dobyns rods are consistently about a half power and action rating high while Exprides are definitely about a half power low as general rule. I know this, I have a St Croix Victory Medium Extra Fast that has a noodle for the first 3-4 guides then shuts off quickly

  3. Wrong. Strength is the overall stiffness of the rod. Ultra light, light, medium light, medium, medium heavy, heavy, extra heavy, etc. are most common in US rods. Better rods may refer to action. This is how stiff the tip is and how quickly it bends to the backbone. Slow, medium, fast, extra fast, etc.

  4. Some clarification here Randy… “Power” refers to light, medium-light, medium, medium-heavy, heavy, etc. Action refers to extra-fast, fast, moderate-fast, moderate, slow. For example, you can buy a medium power rod with a fast action, or you can have medium power rod with a moderate action. Heavy power, extra fast action, heavy power, moderate-fast action, etc. etc. You seem to interchange the two terms but they are two distinct aspects of a rod.
