My First Time Bass Fishing in Cape Town… Not What I Expected! 🎣
An early start, a beautiful Western Cape sunrise, and a few hours chasing largemouth bass… but things didn’t exactly go to plan. 🎣🇿🇦
In this fishing vlog, I head out to the dam for an early morning bass fishing session in the Western Cape, South Africa. The goal was simple: spend a few hours by the water, explore different spots, try a few techniques, and hopefully land a bass or two. Unfortunately, the fish had other ideas!
There’s always that feeling of excitement before the first cast. You arrive with a plan, look across the water, and start imagining where the bass might be holding. With the sun coming up and a whole morning ahead, it feels like anything could happen. But as every angler knows, a promising start doesn’t always turn into a successful fishing session.
Throughout the morning, I tried different spots and techniques, hoping to find something that would get a response. Every new area brought another reason to keep casting, and every change felt like it might be the one that turned the session around. The bass, however, weren’t making things easy.
This video follows the morning as it unfolded, including the effort, the quiet stretches, and the reality of going fishing when the fish simply aren’t playing along. Stick around until the end to see how the session went.
🎣 THE REALITY OF BASS FISHING
Fishing videos often make it look as though every trip produces a great catch. But there are plenty of mornings when you put in the time, make the changes, and still struggle to get the result you came for.
That’s part of what makes fishing so addictive. You can head out full of confidence and leave with more questions than answers. Was it the spot? The timing? The presentation? Or was it just one of those mornings?
I don’t have a perfect explanation for how this session went. What I do have is another morning spent learning, trying, and getting a little more experience on the water. Sometimes the most useful part of a trip is figuring out what you want to do differently next time.
If you’ve ever spent hours chasing largemouth bass with very little to show for it, you’ll probably recognise the feeling. One more cast becomes a few more casts, and suddenly you’ve stayed longer than you planned because you’re convinced something could happen at any moment.
🌅 AN EARLY MORNING IN THE WESTERN CAPE
Even when the fishing is tough, an early start has its rewards. Watching the sunrise, taking in the scenery, and spending a few quiet hours outdoors made this a morning worth filming.
There’s something special about arriving at the water while the day is still getting started. Before everything gets busy, you get a chance to slow down, focus on the next cast, and enjoy being outside.
The Western Cape makes a beautiful setting for an outdoor adventure, and this trip was a reminder to appreciate the whole experience. Catching fish is always the goal, but the surroundings and the time spent exploring are a big part of why I keep coming back.
This wasn’t the session I had pictured when I set out, but I still wanted to share it. Some trips give you the fishing footage you hoped for. Others give you a story about patience, persistence, and making the most of the morning you actually had.

When you arrive at a dam early in the morning, what’s your first move? Do you stay in one promising spot and work it properly, or cover more water until you find some activity?
I’d also love to hear from other South African anglers. What have your recent sessions been like, and what’s one thing you’ve learned from a day when the fishing didn’t go to plan?
