The dog days of summer are in full swing and it’s hot out there. While some bass anglers shy away from the heat, August is one of our favorite favorite months to target big bass. The trick is knowing where to look, knowing what to throw and staying patient and consistent.
REMEMBER that there are multiple versions of the box every month and this is the version that I received. Yours may be slightly different.
MONSTERBASS Blade Burner:
The Blade Burner is a versatile spinnerbait that mimics a wounded baitfish. Its flashy blades and lifelike movement make it a great choice for fishing in clear or slightly stained waters. During summer, target shallow and weedy areas early in the morning and late in the evening, as well as around points and drop-offs during the day. Retrieve the Blade Burner at a steady pace, allowing the blades to create vibrations that attract bass.
Yo-Zuri 3DB Pencil:
The 3DB Pencil is a topwater bait designed to imitate a distressed baitfish on the water’s surface. Summer bass often hang out near the edges of aquatic vegetation or near structures like docks and fallen trees to escape the heat. Cast the Pencil near these areas and use a “walk-the-dog” retrieve technique by twitching your rod to make the bait zigzag across the surface, creating irresistible commotion that can trigger aggressive strikes.
Thunderhawk Lures Grunt Jig:
The Grunt Jig is a versatile jig designed for flipping and pitching into heavy cover where bass seek shade during hot summer days. Work the Grunt Jig around submerged structures like logs, rocks, and vegetation, allowing it to fall slowly through the water column. Use a subtle jigging motion to entice lethargic bass to strike.
Bucketmouth Brand Bucket Get’Er Frog:
The Bucket Get’Er Frog is a weedless topwater frog that excels in lily pads, mats, and other dense vegetation. During summer, bass often lurk in these areas for both shelter and an easy meal. Cast the frog onto the mats and retrieve it with a series of short, sharp jerks to create a splashing and darting action, imitating a frog on the run.
Thunderhawk Lures Grenade 2.75:
The Grenade 2.75 is a soft plastic creature bait with multiple appendages, making it ideal for a finesse approach during the heat of summer. Fish it on a Carolina rig or Texas rig around rocky structures, drop-offs, and points. Slowly drag and hop the Grenade along the bottom to imitate a crawfish or other bottom-dwelling prey.
Vicious Fishing Busy Beaver:
The Busy Beaver is a soft plastic bait resembling a beaver or other small mammal. Fish it on a Texas rig or a jighead and target areas with submerged vegetation, laydowns, and fallen trees. Use a slow and deliberate retrieve with occasional pauses to mimic the movements of a foraging creature.
Zee Baits Snake Charmer:
The Snake Charmer is a soft plastic swimbait designed to imitate a snake or eel. Fish it on a weighted hook or jighead and swim it through deeper water along drop-offs, submerged ledges, and points. Vary your retrieval speed to imitate the movement of a snake or injured fish.
Castaic Fishing Jerky J:
The Jerky J is a realistic soft plastic jerkbait that imitates a wounded baitfish. Cast it around submerged structures and use a twitch-pause-twitch retrieve to create an erratic, darting action. This can be especially effective when bass are targeting baitfish near the surface during the summer months.
Remember, bass behavior can vary based on factors such as water temperature, weather conditions, and local habitat. Experiment with different techniques and retrieve speeds to find what works best on any given day.
