Randy, my Father in law was the most mild mannered peaceful man you could ever meet. The night after we buried my Dad who was a WWII turret gunner in a B 17. My Father in Law opened up about his WWII service. Like the guy you served in the restaurant, he told his story of being one of the first Marines on Iwo Jima. No bravado about it, just a mild mannered class act.

Being labeled has never bothered me one bit. I'm a proud, white Conservative southerner. Proud bible believing, pro life Christian that stands with Israel. This is America, be who you are no matter what. My best friend is a proud blue dog democrat that is agnostic and I love the guy. We have a great time fishing, be it in a boat or wading for Smallies. We're also both Veterans and retired law enforcement professionals.
In my opinion, the vitriol in our country has come about over the last 70 years as one political party strives to turn this country into something it was not ever meant to be. As for judging people, that too has gotten worse just in the last 30 years. People being called racists and worse simply for holding political views that are different. People get a label because of their actions and life styles. Labels are as old as civilization itself. Not sure how to avoid getting labeled. I would like to meet your friend sometime. The conversation would definitely be interesting.
