My Profile:
http://www.mattstefanfishing.com/

I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

  1. I understand you have to use FFS to make a living and support your family. I don't agree with FFS but if it is available to you use, then use it. It should be banned but it's not at this moment, so Good Luck. My favorite YouTube fishing channel.

  2. I'd love to hear more from you as you work on deep cranking. I started doing more of that this summer with very little success — aside from getting in a good workout ;-).

  3. Hey Matt- if my partner insisted on fishing while I was putting in the work scanning at 2-3mph what would you recommend we do/throw? It's not my boat so I don't have the option of going alone and putting in the time.

  4. Great plan presentation Matt.
In AZ, we fish 52 weeks a year. Our reward for the horrific weather we endure each summer.
My #1 priority is to learn how to use the Core Tackle products with various soft baits.
#2, practice to feel confident about using crank baits.
#3, learn how to use my Active Target on my kayak with the Elite FS9.

  5. I've started to learn forward facing sonar and skipping a jig with a baitcaster. Both are new to me and I also need to make the commitment to deep cranking. Thanks for sharing your plans for improvement heading into next year.

  6. Matt ty for your help and videos. I recently purchased $70 of hover rig and tush product from your Tackle Warehouse link. Went with a variety package so I could test them all. I’m struggling with tearing up my swim baits and didn’t realize how fast a 3/32 weighted bait can sink. Just an idea but if you made a video or two on those it would be a big help.

  7. You know what I'm working on- being able to get in the bed early enough to be able to get up at sunrise. As I get older, this gets harder and harder to continue doing. I lived that way for years- in bed by 8-9 pm and up by 4:30– 5 am- but after that heart attack last year- everything changed. I can't go to sleep at night- have a real hard time- which makes getting up early near impossible. And where I live, during the hottest part of summer- you either get up by sunrise or there's very little use in going. Not only do the fish become very difficult to catch- but it also just gets really hard to stay out in it- the heat feels like it's literally leaning on you- like the sun is crushing you into the dirt. Or you're on the kayak and feels like you're sitting in a frying pan. I've had plastics melt in the bag while sitting in my Yakattack black-pak, which isn't black- it's beige. But I'm sitting about 2 feet from it so- you can imagine how comfortable that is- with a full PFD on. And my PFD is no joke- it's an NRS which is like a full vest- not one of those things that just drapes around your neck. So yeah- being able to get up early is step 1. If you can't get it right- the rest doesn't matter. During fall and winter that changes- but if you don't stay in the rut- come late spring, you'll pay for it.

  8. This is a great segment Matt. Learn something on every outing, no matter how small it might be. When I look back over my decades of fishing, it seems like each year had a different fishing technique or boat control/positioning, electronics, line/knots, etc I had focused on.
Also, what knot do you use on your braid to fluorocarbon leader?

  9. Practice makes perfect! Casting, pitching and flipping are in that mix to. Graphing has always been up there on my list. Even on gin clear lakes I'll side scan to ID things you usually wouldn't see. Old sunken boats tree's the were blown over floated off before sinking. Nice spots that few people know about.

  10. Waiting for the early pre-spawn season in November to start searching for that elusive trophy bass here in Florida 😉 will be practicing with large swim and glide baits 😀

  11. What deep cranks have you had more success on? I too could improve in all these areas but the livescope one (I don’t have one on the yak) but I was curious about what deep cranks you like. I have more success on the 6xd.

  12. Working on finesse techniques this year ( Drop shot, wacky worm, shaky head ). Down here in Florida I do a lot of speed worm, vibrating jig, swim jig. Punching heavy cover. I feel like I leave some fish biting by not by not using a more finesse approach sometimes.

  13. Trying to get better with FFS also . But my home lake isn’t fishing very good this year. Not sure if it’s the lake or if it’s me. But I struggle to catch anything with FFS. It’s not as easy as it looks.

  14. Matt, how much (lack of) water clarity is too much for you to look for off shore fish, scrap it and just fish shallow? My lakes in SE Ohio are all about 1.5 ft in visibility, and I have little success catching fish deep. All our brush piles are covered with crappie.

  15. I'm working on starting my YouTube channel. I'm going to spend time this fall filming content. I'm a trophy bass fisherman from Western North Carolina. We have a unique fishery. Our bass are trout eaters. So our bass can get over 10lbs. I've caught 35 bass over 10lbs in the past 30 years. I catch most of my bass late fall through winter. I spend hours idling around looking at down imaging until I find the right place that holds big bass. Most of my bass come out of 30ft plus. I enjoy spinning tackle with 6lb line. And yes I've landed more than half of my 10lb bass on 6lb line. I've kept my knowledge a secret and Lake X for years. I will be making content on how to find these offshore fish. I also enjoy multi species angling too. I will have tips on finding white bass. Dropshoting with live minnows. Tracking bass movements and why they move. Matt It takes a real man to say here is a weakness I have. It takes a bigger man to say here's how I'm going to get better. I have a ton of respect for you. My weakness is the fear of disappointment my target audience on YouTube. That's one reason I've held off so long.

  16. I have a question – Say that you fish mostly shallow water…less than 10-12 feet up to less than 2 feet. A lot of times there is good current flowing through, usually in the same direction. What would you buy for your boat if you could only choose one – spot lock or power poles?

  17. One of your Pro's Randy Blaukat is doing everything he can to get live scope banned?? Why do you have Humminbird graphs but also have Lowrance live scope?? Never understood why fisherman aren't loyal to one brand. Love your videos and all the knowledge you have are willing to share. Keep up the great work.

  18. I’ll we working on mastering electronics. The more you learn the more you realize how much more they are capable of doing — finding structure, cover, and actual fish, big fish.

  19. Need to work on every thing .But I got them today with a fluke best five 15 pound . Green pumpkin. Got last one in a school of bass pushing shad to the surface .Heard the drag today. And some acrobatics. Appreciate video best channel.

  20. I know a lot of the guys here in MN use FFS landscape or perspective mode in weeds and shallow water. You can see the fish moving in the weeds without having to pan back and forth so much. I've been resisting buying it myself, not being a tournament guy I don't really think I need it, plus I fear my partner will not enjoy fishing with me as much!
