Making a Swimbait, Perfect Swimbait Action

Making this swimbait was an experiment from the start. We struggled a bit with the action but, with a few minor tweaks this swimbait now has the perfect swimming action. This is somewhat of a breakthrough for big swimbait designs. I think with this new style of swimbait hinge (Im calling a “lever-hinge”) a lure maker could extend the number of segments out much more than traditional hinge joint designs and still get a killer swimming action.

  1. Thanks for this series, so interesting to see you work through the problems, my father always taught me that the man who makes no mistakes never made anything and to see problems as challenges, not outright failures. Please continue with your quest for the ultimate lure. Cheers…

  2. Thanks for all the lessons to casting lures, I have a question regarding micro ballons.
I know you done a segment about percentages and this segment is about the four piece im sorry, but im a bit confused.
My question is, if micro balloons increases the volume. Could i deduct the percentage from the original mix ratio so i dont get so to speak spill over or is only based upon the initial mix. Im using q cel 520 (Barnes) and alumi res rc3.

  3. Pretty nice action I must say, looks like an exaggerated trout. Can't wait to see it painted.

(Don't take any of the following as criticism, just spit-balling ideas)

My initial thought for why the 2nd section didn't have any action was that the forces were taking the easy route and moving the two lighter, tail sections before the heavier main body. I know it would be a pain to produce but I wonder how the the lure would act if you used different density resins to make each segment weight exactly the same.
My other thought concerned the blunt profile of the nose and whether that was creating a sort of pressure cushion at the front that channelled water around the first two sections. I wonder if the front section when viewed from above was more of a concave wedge with a sharp termination before the second section to induce flow separation whether it would increase the amount of turbulence you'd create beyond that point.
