This phenomenon happens every year. 1000s of Bait fish are chased on to the Beach by Mackerel and Bass.
In this video you see a 66cm Bass I caught on Lure and some amazing scenes as the Mackerel round up small Herring on to the Beach.

Thanks to the Website British Sea fishing, They are a great online resource and that’s where I got the Garfish Facts.
Im still out of action….turning green with envy. You should have taught the one by your feet to sit up and give his fin! 😉 Lovely spot you have up there Matt. I caught large Gar off Brixham breakwater last year…orrible things! 😀
Another great video Matt
Pity about the reel giving you so trouble how would you rate it compared to the Sedona?
I have caught garfish at home in Ireland will be along time before I get back interesting fish.
Bought a Drift rod a few weeks back it’s fantastic casts out of site. Loads of Mackerel but no Bass yet. I am a lure pike angler so know a bit about lures and make them.

Awesome again Matt, loved catching mackerel using light gear & the old mackerel spinner, float fish 4 garfish great fun on light gear, good all round bait ,think u need Penn lube 4 reel .Happy catching from Australia Nick
Hello Matt, another brilliant video, I purchased a 9ft Abu Garcia Ruby Spinning Rod a while back, what reel would you recommend?,? Thanks Matt keep up the good work.🐟🐟
Where did you fish ?
What time did you start
Been over Brixham today. Landed my first Wrasse, but absolutely dead for anything like bass or mackerel. Not sure if your in Devon or not. Lovley work tho, great video! I am dying to get a top water bass smash. Still dreaming
My question is, if the mackerel are being chased by bass would it perhaps be worth using a sinking soft weedless Like a black minnow to get under the shoal where there may be a lazy bigger one lurking below picking off easy meals ,?
Excellent upload as usual mate and thank goodness your not one of the tinsel chuckers who fills a binbag, some people would have taken to many and probably wasted loads as they don't keep well ,your a proper fisherman mate
Thanks Matthew for fantastic video's I had a thought about whitebait, have you tried using it for fishing may be freeze it for fishing some other time of year just before the Mackerel come in
Mackerel stayed up here thick in North Norfolk this year giving us incredible fishing for 6 weeks, holding loads of bass coming through in marauding shoals literally a rod length out. Was brilliant. Since they left I’ve enjoyed 8 blanks 😂😭
I've caught loads of garfish – but then again I was fishing on the coast in Denmark, where they're very common and arrive in big shoals. they can be hard to hook but you attach a single hook to a lure like a Dexter using a bit of monofil about 25-30mm long so it trails a bit
they're amazing fun on a light fly rod using a streamer with a bit of weight to make it rise and sink on the retrieve. they often jump and 'tail walk'
(about the drag problem: I always loosen the drag after a session to stop the felt pads being compressed and getting 'grabby')
Wicked session Matt. Nothing better than in the water chasing bass and mackerel 😊😊😊
Good thing my wife wasn't there she would be grabbing the small fish and getting the frying pan out (she eats them whole …not my thing )
Where is this place??
As always a great post 👍
Are they tasty looks like a loot of free food
Lovely video Matt, I expect you know someone but if not Felindre are a good reel repair service.
Crazy sight with the water boiling with baitfish. Terrible thought that you're born to be eaten.
Crazy amount of fish in your area .. well done
Why chuck back mackerel, once handled they die within 10mins when returned to sea
Shame about your reel i hope you can get it fixed. I dont mind catching Mackerel as a by catch its better than blanking but it is hard to get through them sometimes
Well done Matt, a good session & a lovely location. I couldn't believe my eyes the first time I saw thousands of bait fish jumping onto the beach at Chesil, years ago. I was just as astonished the first time I caught a Garfish at Beer, again many years ago, I had never seen anything like it! Bigger ones put up quite a fight. Great video, keep them coming. Ps: why not treat yourself to a pair of waders?!
I’ve Done game fishing for 20 years and
Can be boring
Good time to take children out fishing, otherwise they get bored
Only ever seen the water in a boil like that once before, you're very lucky 🎣🐟👍
Love it when it's like this. Hasn't really happened down my way this side of summer. Had a night in may but that's the only time I've had mackerel in numbers this year. Keep up the great work 💪
As always, STUNNING, 👍kind regards Mike, Norfolk. Tight lines.
Hi Matt. Great video. I have only had one small Gar down our little mark on a seeker. Not had a decent one for years. Used to float fish for them on the old pier many years ago.
I got a Shimano Nasci last week. What a great reel. Really impressed with it.
I'm going to go down tomorrow morning after my last night shift before that wind picks up if you're about?
Hoping the water will be clear.
New subscriber here 👋 Another great video 🎣🎣 what camera are you using?
Hi I've caught many gar fish at rame head and penley point in Cornwall they make great Whiting bait in the winter.
Crackin video, those bait fish washed up do you ever collect some for the freezer for future bait.
You’re so lucky having those mackerel in so close the seas are looking so healthy.👍
Thanks for sharing 👍
i remember years ago fishing off a charter boat in cardigan bay an it was the maceral who were jumping out the water they were being chased by a pod of dolphins about 30 or so
no mackrawl in brighton just herring
I have had garfish off the pier at sewanage 1/2 to 2lb
Nice
