At a Lake Powell bass tournament in 2018, two anglers brought an impressive catch to the weigh-in. But officials spotted something odd: fat bodies, small heads, and red fins. Had these fish actually come from another lake?

This Fish Tales documentary investigates how Robert Dennett and Kamron Wootton became the focus of a Utah fishing tournament cheating investigation that led wildlife officers to Quail Creek Reservoir. Follow the clues from a suspicious weigh-in and boat-entry records to a University of Utah laboratory, where scientists examined tiny ear stones called otoliths. Stable isotope analysis revealed a secret the fish couldn’t hide.

The case became a rare example of forensic science exposing fishing tournament fraud—and ended in guilty pleas. It also raised serious questions about fair competition and the risks of transporting live fish between lakes.

Watch to discover how scientists cracked the case.
