I went back out to Lake Perris on August 13 to follow up on the deeper bite I found during my previous trip. This time I committed to fishing 20–25 feet, and at this point it’s pretty obvious that the deeper bite is producing better-quality fish.

I’ll admit, fishing this deep isn’t really my preferred way to fish. I’d much rather find them shallow, but sometimes you have to fish where the fish are.

I managed five bass on the trip, with four caught on camera. The first fish of the day weighed 3 pounds, and overall the quality was noticeably better than what I’ve been finding shallower.

The wind was pretty rough throughout the trip, but Spot-Lock made it much easier to stay in position and work the deeper water effectively.

Every fish came on a Stellar Baits Cosmic Green Pumpkin worm rigged on a 1/4 oz pegged Texas rig.

I’ll be back at Lake Perris to keep testing this pattern, but next time I want to take the same 20–25 foot depth range and try it in different areas of the lake to see how consistent this deeper bite really is.
