KVD Explains How to Target Prespawn Bass With Swimbaits

Kevin VanDam delivers an in-depth tutorial on the use of finesse swimbaits during the late prespawn to target roaming bass preparing to spawn. Yes, jerkbaits shine during much of the prespawn, but experience has taught KVD that a straight-retrieved finesse swimbait is better at covering water and triggering big bites just before the spawn. This calendar period may coincide with baitfish schooling in the shallows, but whatever the case, it’s an easy way to find fish roaming points and shorelines stretches. Kevin also goes into detail on how he adjusts line size rather than jig head weight to cover multiple depths with the same lure, as well as rod and reel pairing for the presentation. This is a must-watch swimbait tip for those looking to diversity their traditional cold-water prespawn presentations.

  1. Why is it I seem to catch more fish on an A rig when the water is 45-50 vs a swimbait. Where as when the water hits over 50 they seem to prefer a bigger profiled swimbait on its own over an A rig?

  2. Iconelli would get windmill pummeled back into fetal position in very short order "KVD Style" if it ever came down to boat launch fisticuffs.
The guy's like a damn Terminator. The truck won't go any faster so you release the boat. You look back and he runs right thru it and is now gaining on you. "Get back here Iconelli!" "I'm going to thrash you!"

  3. There wasn't any information given about what makes the strike king rage swimmer any better than or different from the Strike King Swim'n Caffeine Shad.    Also, he didn't say anything about the high snag potential of his exposed hook set up.    He has made a great deal of money in fishing tournaments.   But just putting his name on lures won't make me buy them.     I have tried the Strike King Swim'n Caffeine Shad and it is an okay bait.   The Swim Senko, however,  has proven to be much better for me.

  4. I saw your video on shadow rap jerk bait slow sinking. I went right to bass pro. Bought it. And went to the lake and hit my personal best 5.68 in NEW YORK CITY lakes.

  5. I'd never question KVD on catching bass, but he talks about using a slower reel and then in the vid it shows it to be a 7:1. I remember the days when that was considered a "burner"!
