Is Professional Bass Fishing a Sport or a High Stakes Hobby

Is professional bass fishing a sport or a high stakes game of poker and a hobby? With professional bass fishing tournaments using a ‘pay to play’ method, does that mean it’s a sport of hobby? Some might suggest that large mouth bass fishing tournaments at the highest level are gambling, others would like for the anglers and fisherman to be considered playing a sport. But what is it, a sport or hobby? Let’s talk about it.

  1. I used to think it was becoming a sport, but it’s like it has stalled out for years now (one step forward, two steps back kind of thing). Owners too interested in putting money in their pockets instead of the anglers. They’ve also made some bad decisions (not just recently) that have affected both the fans and anglers. Just poor management, I think.

  2. This is one of your stretching videos. You don’t need to work out to be better at finding fish. That would be a life choice by the angler. Does it help? It’s debatable, I’ve done the work out before in great shape thing. I felt better after a long day, but it’s debatable wether I fished better. Being in fishing shape is more important. Meaning being used to the long days on the boat and the balance required for the boat rocking around. Sorry but working out and running don’t help with that part. Trust me on that, I’ve tried. Time on the water is tough to beat. Oh, and every sport has an off season.

  3. Is bowling a sport? How about bean bag toss? Some of the events at the recent Olympics were not sports, i.e. break dancing. Have you seen some of these YouTube fisherman that are clearly not athletes? I'm going with a hobby. Thanks Steve.

  4. Hey Steve, way too stir the pot 😉.
    I'm just kidding.
There is no doubt that the Bass fisherman at the top level are professionals.
The difference between a hobby and a sport is viewership and entry fees. In the PGA, you have to pay for a membership plus a minimal fee at the clubs. The difference is viewership. I was reading an article about how their viewership dropped 20% to just under 10 million for the masters. The average is about 6 to 9 million per PGA event.
That is the difference. Viewership equals sponsors and sponsors equal money. Eliminating the need for entry fees.
Bass fishing is a niche inside a niche, and the pro side takes a special dedication to follow.
Back in the day, Bassmaster was a one hour highlight show. Eze to follow and not a many day event. That's how they built their viewer base.
I do believe it is a sport in the basic sense. Is there a goal? Is there competition? Are there rules? Is there a winner? If you answer yes to all of these criteria, then you have a sport. Whether you pay any entry fee is irrelevant.
Hey, I hope you and your family are doing well and are safe.
    Tight lines.
    Regards, Steven.

  5. The answer is, it depends on what you do with it. There are some making a great living doing it. Others not so much. It’s an individual thing currently. It needs to be more than that to reach what people think it should be. I think the Unity required to do this is further away now than it has been in the past.

  6. Sport: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Hobby: a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in, especially for relaxation.

Professional: engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime.

Profession: A principal calling, vocation, or employment

So, neither they are professional profession… lol

  7. Bass fishing is a sport you are you are fishing to get them I don't know how it would be any other way that would be for that to be a sport and yes it is a hobby to that's why I am a bass fisherman

  8. HOBBY it will never b a real sport
Sports are regulated so everyone is on the same playing field, bass fishing isn't that way he who can afford the best stuff and the best info will prosper, until u eliminate the info sharing and buying info it'll never be a legitimate sport, most wins are conplete b.s it ain't hard to catch fish with your roommate tells u where to go or u buy info

  9. It’s not a sport because you have to play to pay. I’m disappointed that the anglers didn’t ban together to change that. The cost for fishing is at an all time high, but payouts are still the same as they were back in the 90’s. It’s sad to see

  10. How can you get rid of pay to play? It's not a spectator sport, so there is no non-endemic sponsorship. Who would pay the anglers? Only a rich benefactor giving away his money could do it, and rich people don't get rich giving away money.

  11. Your absolutely right, the angler is fishing for his own money, that's gambling. To be a sport some organization needs to put the cash and a lot of it. The angler should be able to make a living, not just the top 4 or 5.

  12. I would've called it a sport a few years ago …maybe. Nowadays, it's much more like a lottery or raffle. Pros purchase a participation ticket and hope they are the ones to drop the foward facing sonar transducer on the right group of fish. Is it anybody's tournament to win. That being said, I'm really hoping to see the NPFL bring back the sport.

  13. No way you can make enough money from TV and advertising to make this a paid business adventure. IMO Nascar is dying due to lack of sponsorship and the cost of the technology. No money for a business to work here.
