Is Live Scope RUINING Bass Fishing?

Live Scope aka forward facing sonar (FFS) might be the single most controversial thing to ever hit bass fishing. In this bass fishing tips video I give my opinion on live scope.

  1. Bass fishing pressure is very difficult for biologists and universities to gauge, much less validate the data to be interpreted as FFS being the lone culprit to a declining, or difficult to catch, fish population. What FFS does do is allow fish to be found that evaded our presence before. This technology creates a gray area of hunting and fishing ethics and values where humans disagree. Rightfully those tournament anglers who know how to use technology to their advantage, AND make a profitable use of said technology, are going to defend it. They will justify its use with a rational cost-benefit analysis that says, "win tournament or acquire target species, pay down debts or achieve desired results. " Here in SoCal, we don't have a state fishery concerned with declining #s or difficult to catch species of Largemouth Bass (LMBs). The State of California focuses on other salt and fresh water species, especially those like halibut, Salmon, trout but not LMBs. As an angler who fishes twice a week, I can easily see the effects of all the fishing pressures on our local bodies of water in San Diego. Our State biologist have given recent #s of fish surveys but never what the threshold #s of a situation that would create a repopulation response needed by the State.

  2. Good video. My answer to your title question would be , Yes. In other words as you have stated we don't have enough data to make a determination one way or the other. The controversy is really coming from a few who speak rather loudly and don't know how to use it or have chosen not to use it. They use their opinions and click bait to draw people to their channels and like to do a lot of gaslighting. Thank you for saying fishing at it's core is boring. Although I watch a lot of MLF. I spend way to much time in watching MLF BPT tournaments. I watched hours of the Eufala OK tournament of anglers not catching fish. This was a shallow muddy water tournament where FFS was not used, or at least not used effectively. It was what many would say a "traditional" tournament. But very boring to watch. Compare that to Redcrest where in a 30 minute time span I watched Dustin Connell catch 30 lbs of bass to forge into the lead that he never relinquished. Too me that was much more exciting. I appreciate your opinion on thinking FFS is boring to watch but I more appreciate that you are not trying to convince the world that it's boring to watch and therefore bad for the sport because you think it's boring.

  3. Let's face it, Bassmaster and MLF are businesses and in order for their businesses to survive they need viewers. For a majority of these tournaments now the anglers are using FFS and as you said it's boring. So BASS and MLF will allow FFS until Fox Sports and advertisers stop seeing a good return on their investment. If viewership on FS1 drops don't expect Fox to want to renew a TV rights contract with BASS.
For everyday fisherman, I think it's kinda cheating. I feel way more pride and satisfaction figuring out a bite over just catching fish that appeared on the screen.

  4. I was raised in the city that hosted the Greatest Spectacle In Racing. The Indianapolis 500. I have seen cars with turbine engines and one that came out of a school bus. Roger Penske one year found a loophole in the rule book that allowed him to develop a pushrod engine that produced 150 more horsepower over the rest of the field. I bye the way drive a Chevy Spark. My point is this, you can pay for and use all the technology you can afford or you can dig up some worms and get out your cane pole. Either way it’s still fishing just as it’s the same as driving your car. I for one not only can’t afford FFS and have no desire to use it. I have a friend that I avoid fishing with that has all the latest gadgets. Funny thing is last time I fished with him he had no clue how to use it and spent more time looking for fish than fishing.

  5. That rooster in the background hates FFS! That's why he is crowing every time you mention it and I would probably like it if I wanted to spend that much for it . Otherwise I liked the old style of fishing to watch.

  6. Yep, the cell phones, smart phones, drones (UFOs) and other stuff. Look up Oat gray unleashed and their episode on the Malaysian flight and you'll find out it's been transported via star trek like technology to our CIA blacklist site fior terrorist and stuff in the Indian ocean. It's a cool watch.

  7. I fish mostly from the bank. I’ve got a little cheap cheap kayak fish from every once in a while. I don’t fish tournaments. I just enjoy it to my core. I’ve never seen it in person. I’ve only seen it on TV and videos and what I’ll come up with is it’s no different than a rod or a real or a bait it’s just another tool in the toolbox and we all know that there is not one tool better than everything and can do everything a framing hammer is good at hammering nails it’s good at breaking things apart, but a sledgehammer is better but neither one of those can be a screwdriver. It’s just another tool. For us to learn how to outsmart them stupid little things that swim around in the water

  8. Can’t afford it so don’t have it. Don’t watch it either. Like you said, too boring. Hours I watch pro tournaments has gone down significantly and may go away completely if this trend continues. Got better things to do.

  9. I have it, I use it about 25% of the time. I'll scan the water really to see what the bottom contours look like, where the weeds start or end, I rarely see bass, but I can better see the structures where they might be. The worst advertising Garmin did was make it look like anyone can immediately catch a fish using it. A lot of anglers, including myself believe it can spook fish and announce the anglers presence.

  10. I believe it shouldn't be allowed in tournaments. I could see it being of good use from an educational standpoint for the study of bass to validate what we have all be told over the years about there habits or movements. However, I believe it could also be used to negativity impact our fisheries aswell.

  11. In fishing, ffs goes completely against fair chase. Anyone calling themselves a pro that’s using it in tournaments for money is only lying to themselves.
