I Switched to This Bait, And Everything Changed

​Sometimes you just have to ditch the topwater and slow things down. In this session, I kick things off trying to draw a strike on a popper around my dad’s dock, but the fish just aren’t committing the way I want them to. Time to make a change.

​I put the popper away, pull out the Yamamoto Fuzzy Nut, and switch up my approach to target the deep cover and edges of the dock structure. What follows is pretty much peak bank fishing chaos. Right as I’m breaking down the dock, my dad’s dog comes sprinting out to greet me. I look right at it and joke, asking if it’s going to bring me a bass—and quite literally the exact second the dog turns around and runs off, my rod loads up with a vicious strike.

​Only problem? It shakes free and gets away right at the boat. Heartbreaker.

​Instead of letting it ruin the morning, I refocus, adjust my angles, and carefully pick apart the rest of the dock’s perimeter. That persistence pays off in a big way when I finally stick a healthy 15.5-inch bass to salvage the spot and save the day.
