In this video, I review the Daiwa Regal Spinning Reel—an awesome budget-friendly option for bass fishing and even light tournament setups—but I made one critical mistake: I spooled it with the WRONG line! Whether you’re fishing finesse techniques like the Ned rig, drop shot, or wacky rig, choosing the right line is everything, and I learned that the hard way. If you’re looking for the best spinning reel under $100, the Daiwa Regal definitely delivers smooth performance and killer value—but only if you pair it with the right line setup! Learn from my fail and get the most out of your gear for your next tournament fishing trip or weekend on the water. #BassFishing #bassmasterclassic #DaiwaRegal #FinesseFishing #TournamentFish
these were on sale at bass pro in canada and I pointed it out to another fisherman and no joke buddy bought 6 of them on the spot. he kept adding on different sizes it was hilarious!!!
Berkley is horrible, $30 for a spool of junk. The Sunline Defier is like $8 cheaper and 100% better line, you just have to size up because it's in Japan spec so the 18 is equivalent to 10lb US spec.
I had this same issue with two of the regals size 3000, I had spooled straight mono 10 and 12, added a shim, and now added braid. Any other suggestions or should I just toss this thing in the water? Ridiculous. Is it not a jigging or lure reel?
Put the line to the edge is it worth it. I've always stop before the first curve around 1 to 2mm and never had a problem with line issue. My dad used monofilament line for ever and I haven't had a advantage over him how come. Thinner than monofilament line on but what is braided line for just can't figure it out. We don't usually pass 8 lbs line for any fishing I've done. Just thinking about line nice topic.
Great review. I have always preferred Diawa's over Shimano. I have both of these reels and am very happy with them. If you want to spend a few bucks more the Fuego is the bomb. I bought it for the looks originally but it's super smooth and now have 7 of them. A buddy buys nothing but Vanfords so I recently got one on sale for shits and giggles.. It's got nothing on the Fuego other than being lighter at twice the price. But depending on the rod you use, too light makes it tip heavy.. The only down side to the Diawa's is the bail spring is very light. If you don't position the open bail at the bottom.and cast really hard you run the risk of it closing as you start the cast. Lobbing a cast is not a problem. None the less I love them at that price point.
I can understand 200+ for baitcasters with the DC anti backlash, light spool, always wet flesh hole. BUTTT for a spinning reel anything over $120 is just a dick ruler.
I have become a fan of new Seaguar PE X8 lure edition line. But don't buy it in the states it's too high. I get it from digitaka for $17 for 200 meters.
That’s a bummer about the line. I’ve been wanting to try out some sinking braid for the reasons you mention but need to find something that works well.
A Swedish man in Sweden, has invented a special bait caster reel oil. The oil prevents backlashes, drastically increases casting distance, and improves the function of reels with the magnetic brakes turned off or to zero. His utube channel is: The Kajak Fisher or greyarcher1 and you can watch for yourself. The cost of the oil is $30, and he will ship it worldwide. Check out his videos to prove to everybody that his oil really works. I bought a bottle of his oil and he shipped it to me in Japan. I can honestly say that I turned all my reels magnetic brakes completely off, only set the tension knob, and after five days of using the oil, I can honestly say that I have not had any backlashes. He has also managed to cast a BFS reel insane distances with little to no effort.
You ever run like 6-8 pound mono or floro on em? I have a few lighter braid setups but am wanting one with a floro or mono. Was curious on how it performs with those polymer lines or if it’s crazy memory
Pflueger is my goat of freshwater spinning reels. With spyderwire ultracast or seaguar smackdown. But i run suffix for any heavy cover or punching
And when you get J Braid, just get the green. Unless those bass are woketards.
Quit with the Suffix fan boiz.
Diawa J Braid is the best. I've tried them all. Their 10 lb is smaller diameter than 4 lb Trilene.
Daiwa exceller 2023 model in aus is our low budget and there are heaps of better reels like the certate, td sol llI, Luvias, revelry, exist

Professional mistake?
You can shim the Regal's handle shaft with a sliver of bended aluminum from a coke can.
Dude, Daiwa SS1300 is a workhorse, tried and true, same design for decades

Anyone watching this do yourself the favor…….. Stradic

I use Cortland 10lb Braid!!! I have no complaints!!!
Ive seen guys switching hands to cast and then retrieve with a baitcaster for years, but ive never ever seen someone doing it with spinning gear.
wtf?
I appreciate how your reel review became a line review. TWO FOR ONE BOYS! That's value.

It’s like lacing Crocket and Jones dress oxfords with boot laces…some things you just don’t do. Just like life you should always mind your lines.
I actually just picked one up and reeled in a few fish with it. Not bad at all for the money.
That Berkley Forward is rebadged Nanofil/Gliss…junk.

Regal with Trilene smooth cast. Never let you down .

Love all my Daiwa products!

Those blue handle rods on left side of boat are those halo? Great vid btw

I bought that same line, put it on, fished it once and changed it out. Had the exact same problem you did.
Looks loke you have about 25 yards too much line on that reel!
Cortland for the win.
